Sam Houston never even reached the red zone on its home field, notching just three points on a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter.

“We know we can be a good defensive football team,” Helton said. “We still got a lot of things to work on, that’s pretty clear. Sam Houston quarterback Landyn Locke threw for at least 300 yards in each of his first three outings this season, but the Hilltoppers held him to 112 yards on a 13-of-30 performance. WKU’s defensive backs disrupted the air with seven pass breakups. Herard was the leader of the movement, while Tony Newsome Jr. and Jaylen Lewis played pivotal roles as disruptors. Newsome was also responsible for the game’s lone takeaway, intercepting Locke early in the fourth quarter.

“They just brought so much energy, it just felt so good to be out there playing ball,” Herard said of the defensive backs. “When somebody made a play, I was so excited to celebrate. The series concluded in a 23-yard delivery from Brock Glenn to tight end Coleson Arends to hand the Hilltoppers an early 7-0 lead that would never be relinquished.

“We were talking about that all week, scoring on that play and the celebration, so we were excited to do that,” Glenn said of his connection with Arends.

That would be the only touchdown of the night, and nobody reached the end zone for the final 55 minutes of action. Still, WKU found a way to get on the board in all four quarters thanks to Karl Campbell. The kicker proved automatic with three makes on three attempts — all within the 30 to 40-yard range — providing his team the cushion it needed to preserve a comfortable victory.

“We gotta just finish drives,” Helton said. “We’ve gotta convert on short-yardage. For a program renowned for its prolific passing game, Glenn played an atypical role for a WKU quarterback. The Bearkats were excruciatingly close to defeating Troy and Tulsa in the non-conference slate, but CUSA play has been a different type of struggle for Phil Longo’s team. Sam Houston has now gone 10-straight quarters without a touchdown, and the Bearkats must escape their newfound offensive funk.

WKU (3-4, 2-1 CUSA), meanwhile, is finally turning the corner. The Hilltoppers lost their first four FBS matchups by an average of 36 points per game, but a new team has emerged over the past two weeks. WKU has now claimed back-to-back conference victories, capped by an elusive road win. Although WKU exhibited confidence before a snap was even taken Wednesday night in Huntsville, the team’s recent wins are only adding to that confidence heading into the bye week.

“We’re gonna take it one game at a time,” Helton said. “But I do like the fact that we’ve gotten some momentum.
