The Florida Gators are 10.5-point underdogs against the Texas Longhorns heading into Saturday\u2019s matchup at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, according to FanDuel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Florida (4-2, 2-2 SEC), on a two-game slide after starting the season 4-0, faces its first road game as underdogs this season against a Texas team coming off a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma. The No. 7 Longhorns are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.<\/p>\n

Point-spread betting is a wager on the margin of victory in a game, not simply on which team wins. Oddsmakers assign the favorite a negative number, in this case minus-10.5 for Texas, and the underdog a matching positive number. Florida is sitting at plus-10.5, so bet on Texas covers the spread only if the Longhorns win by at least 11 points.<\/p>\n

Several factors influence a point spread, including team performance, power ratings and home-field advantage. Power ratings estimate how many points better or worse a team is than an average team on a neutral field, although different models use different methods.<\/p>\n

Playing at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, which ranks as the seventh-largest college football stadium in the country, gives Texas a 3.4-point home advantage, according to Bluechip Analytics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Texas is defensively stronger, but offensively weaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Florida\u2019s offense was productive during its undefeated start, outscoring opponents 214-91. Running back Jadan Baugh rushed for 600 yards and 11 touchdowns during that stretch. But the drop-off is steep. In losses to Missouri and South Carolina, Florida scored 36 points while allowing 83. Baugh rushed for 72 yards and just one touchdown across the two games.<\/p>\n

Texas has averaged 31.4 points per game this season, while its defense has allowed an average of 16 points per game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although the Longhorns offense is not as productive as Florida, they have been far more successful defensively. Defense has been Florida\u2019s sore spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Florida has averaged 41.7 points per game, but its defense has allowed an average of 34.2 points per game, ranking 113th nationally in scoring defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those numbers help explain why Texas is favored at home. The Longhorns have allowed fewer points per game, while Florida\u2019s defensive struggles have contributed to its two-game slide.<\/p>\n

The process goes like this: Start with the teams\u2019 neutral-field power ratings, then factor in Texas\u2019 home-field advantage and the circumstances surrounding the matchup. Sportsbooks also consider how professional bettors, known as \u201csharps,\u201d respond to the opening line. After those factors are weighed, the number settles at Texas minus-10.5, making Florida a 10.5-point underdog.<\/p>\n

Still, a point spread is not a prediction of certainty. Florida opened the season 4-0 before its consecutive losses and it will have a chance to respond in Austin. To cover the spread, Florida must win outright or lose by no more than 10 points.<\/p>\n
