When I was 16 years old, I accidentally hit a dog with my car.<\/p>\n

It was genuinely one of the worst experiences of my entire life, and it has stuck with me.<\/p>\n

I was horrified, completely freaked out, and I had NO idea what I was even supposed to do.<\/p>\n

This was before I had a cell phone, so I couldn’t exactly Google, “OH MY GOD I HIT A DOG WHAT DO I DO NOW!?”<\/p>\n

I totally panicked.<\/p>\n

Pulled over all willy-nilly in traffic on Slide Road.<\/p>\n

Got out of my car and started screaming and being 100% dramatic about the whole thing.<\/p>\n

I can’t believe I didn’t make things worse.<\/p>\n

Luckily, the dog scampered away. I never found out what happened to it, but I’ve always hoped it got a second chance at life.<\/p>\n

Honestly, I still think about that dog from time to time. I hope he’s doing okay. He’d be approximately 150 in dog years by now…but a girl can dream.<\/p>\n

If you accidentally hit a dog or cat in Lubbock, here’s what you need to know:<\/p>\n

1. Pull over safely – Don’t make a dangerous situation worse. Pull off the road and make sure you are in a safe place before you stop and check out the situation.<\/p>\n

2. Check on the animal if it’s safe – Injured animals may try to bite you out of fear. Don’t try to handle it if you’re unsure of your safety.<\/p>\n

3. Call Lubbock Animal Services – Their field operations number is 806-775-3357. If there is an immediate emergency, call 911.<\/p>\n

4. Report where it occurred – Whether the animal runs away or not, be sure you provide a description of where it happened and the direction you were traveling.<\/p>\n

5. Document the incident – Take pictures of any damage. You might need them later for your insurance company.<\/p>\n
