The co-owner of East Dallas’ Goodfriend Package Store, an amazing sandwich shop and cafe, and Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House, plopped a pizza spot in Garland as part of a revitalization effort by the city back in 2024.

The new location will open at 8686 Ferguson Road, in the same retail center as Whistling Pig. A couple of years ago, Tobin and his business partner, Josh Yingling, noticed that one store in this strip mall had closed. But one slice of space wouldn’t be enough. They needed at least two. When the store next to it closed, they jumped on the chance.

“It’s a great area,” Tobin says about getting this location. “The people in the neighborhood are great, and we know a lot of them. Commercial real estate hasn’t really caught up with the residential market, yet. We like the idea of going into a spot and brightening it up.”

We are partial to all of their concepts because they feel a little gritty, very comfortable and the food is always way better than such a casual atmosphere might imply. The playlists and beer are always well-appointed as well.

Sign up for the Food & Drink newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Fortunate Son is known for its New Haven-style pie: a sourdough crust is rolled thin and cooked fast (five minutes at 650 degrees). The house sourdough starter is named Fogerty in homage to John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, who had the 1969 hit “Fortunate Son.” Well played, sirs.

The signature pizza here is clam pie made with a white sauce, fresh clams, mozzarella and a touch of lemon. For a general idea of pricing, a 12-inch clam pie is $25 and an 18-inch is $36.50.

Wings, salads, high-end appetizers (like burrata), pastas and a serious sandwich game round out the menu, a theme that runs across all their concepts (try the club sandwich at the Goodfriend Package Store). Pasta dishes are scratch-made, cured-egg yolks in the Carbonara and all.

The drink menu is deep and wide with everything from local craft beer to lavender-infused cocktails to Jell-O shots (yes, they have grape).

Everything from the original location will carry over to the new space, though it’s less than half the sprawling Garland restaurant; but oit will have a patio space in front and around the side.

Look for updates on an opening next year. They’re mum on an exact date, just that it will be next year.

Empires are built on clam pie.
