McElroy won a lot of games at Bama, but he didn’t win them all, of course, so he’s also familiar with the situation that Florida and No. 7 Texas find themseleves in on Saturday.

Just a few weeks ago, the Gators were riding high. They were unbeaten and ranked in the top 10. But back-to-back losses to and have sent UF tumbling out of the AP Top 25. So, Florida enters this matchup unranked with a 4-2 overall record and 2-2 in the SEC, with a sense of desperation to avoid that third straight loss.

Meanwhile, Texas suffered a bitter, last-second loss to last week in the Red River Rivalry, which kicked the Horns out of the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll. Texas (4-1 overall, 1-1 SEC) moved down 6 spots and will be trying to avoid the back-to-back losses that Florida just suffered.

With that backdrop of 2 desperate SEC teams smack in the middle of the 2026 season, McElroy shared his opinion on which desperate team will win out.

“I’m taking Texas to win the game, 31-17,” said McElroy on his Always College Football podcast. “I think Texas will win on third down all afternoon, because Florida’s defense is probably going to have a hard time getting off the field. I think Texas is built to live in short yardage.

“Florida’s offense has stalled the past couple weeks against SEC defenses, and this is the best defense I think they’ve seen so far, and that’s no disrespect to South Carolina or Missouri. Texas is a step up in competition and personnel. … Texas wins this one, slowly and on schedule, whether or not we see the offensive fireworks is one of the biggest questions in the game.”

While McElroy has his own thoughts on the Florida-Texas showdown, here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Gators and Longhorns and who it believes has the better odds of prevailing on Saturday in Austin:

Cory Nightingale, a former sportswriter and sports editor at the Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post, is a South Florida-based freelance writer who covers Alabama for SaturdayDownSouth.com.

Greg McElroy is familiar with showdowns like the one that will be taking place on Saturday afternoon in…

[11
132,134,133
post-467018","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news
["GET
