Flood watches remain in effect for these areas through Friday morning, including Del Rio and locations just west of the Hill Country.

Here’s a closer look at the timing and what to expect as the cold front moves into Central Texas:

<img alt="Flood watch is in effect for Del Rio until Friday morning. (National Weather Service)

Thursday afternoon

Central Texas has one more hot and humid day ahead, with temperatures climbing to around 90 degrees before a much cooler and windier weather pattern takes hold. We’re talking about quite the temperature swing this week – from experiencing heat index values near 100 degrees Wednesday afternoon to expecting wind chill values in the 40s by Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The strong cold front will sweep through North Texas by late Thursday afternoon, reaching Dallas around 5 p.m., then Waco around 10 p.m., and Austin near 2 a.m. Friday.

Midnight

The front will be moving through the northern Hill Country, including Burnet and Llano counties, and pushing into western Williamson County around midnight. Winds will immediately shift to the north, with initial gusts around 25 mph quickly increasing to 30 and 40 mph over the next few hours.

Heavier rainfall will be out west, near Brownwood, but spotty showers will begin developing closer to the Interstate 35 corridor then spreading south and east through the overnight period.

3 a.m. Friday

Between 3 and 4 a.m., the cold front will have pushed through Austin, Dripping Springs and Buda, bringing gusty north winds, scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms. While strong or severe storms are not expected, a brief heavy downpour and occasional lightning are possible.

<img alt="Winds will pick up behind the front, packing gusts of 25 to 45 mph before sunrise through Friday evening. (Pivotal)

Winds will quickly pick up behind the front, with gusts reaching 40 mph in downtown Austin by 5 p.m. If you’ve already put up your outdoor Halloween decorations, you’ll want to make sure they’re deflated or securely tied down. Otherwise, your spooky decorations could end up in your neighbor’s yard.

6 a.m. Friday

By daybreak, the cold front will have swept through all Central Texas and into parts of the Coastal Plains. Sustained north winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected in Austin and along the Interstate 35 corridor, with gusts approaching 40 mph.

The day’s highest temperatures will occur ahead of the front, with temperatures steadily falling throughout the day. After starting in the mid- to upper 70s around midnight, temperatures will drop into the low to mid-60s by sunrise, with even cooler air moving in behind the front.

<img alt="Temperatures Friday morning will steadily drop into the lower to mid-60s around daybreak in Austin. (Pivotal)

Friday afternoon and into the weekend

Blustery north winds and much cooler temperatures will be the big weather story for the rest of Friday and into the weekend. In anticipation of the high winds, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Central Texas beginning Friday morning through Friday evening. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph could include gusts as strong as 45 mph.

By Friday afternoon, temperatures will have dropped into the upper 50s and lower 60s, feeling even chillier when you factor in the gusty north winds. That means the air you feel when you step outside on Friday morning won’t necessarily be what you experience later in the afternoon. Plan your wardrobe accordingly, and don’t forget to grab a jacket before heading out the door.

<img alt="Winds will stay gustyin Austin on Saturday with temperatures cooler than normal and highs in the 60s and 70s. Plenty of sunshine and low humidity will set the stage for a beautiful fall weekend across Central Texas. Winds will remain gusty Saturday before finally settling down Sunday.

<a data-ylk="slk:Sign up for the Daily Briefing from the Austin American-Statesman.
