Known as the “Hot Air Balloon Capital of Texas,” Plano’s roots date back to the 1840s, when settlers established a bustling community around a general store. The city was incorporated in 1873 but didn’t become a boomtown for another 100 years, when major companies, including Frito-Lay, moved their headquarters there in the 1980s.

Today, the city has held on to its past while embracing a burgeoning retail, dining, and arts scene, as well as its abundant green space. It’s easy to see why Plano has received recognition for everything from its thriving local business scene to its outdoor recreation and family-friendliness.

“Plano blends the resources and opportunity of a large city with the livability and hospitality of a small town,” says Millerann Moya, assistant director at Visit Plano. “Plano is home to several major corporate headquarters, but the neighborhoods are still close-knit, with access to top-rated schools, over 4,000 acres of parks and trails, and one of the most diverse populations in the country.”

Of course, though, Plano isn’t just a great place to live—all of those qualities also make the city an excellent vacation destination. Here’s what you need to know before planning a trip to Plano, Texas.

Best Things to Do

A scenic nature overlook at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, Texas.Credit: Visit Plano

In my humble opinion, Plano’s outdoor recreation opportunities are among the best in the state, and visitors can experience that proximity to nature firsthand at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. Situated on 200 acres of open prairie, oak thickets, and winding trails, the preserve is a favorite of runners, hikers, and mountain bikers. As a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the preserve is also ideal for birdwatching, with more than 150 species passing through. You might even see deer, bobcats, and coyotes on the trails.

For another glimpse at what life was like before Plano became one of the Lone Star State’s largest suburbs, visit the Heritage Farmstead Museum. This four-acre living history museum encompasses 13 buildings, including the 1891 Farrell-Wilson House and a replica one-room schoolhouse. Docents don period clothing for special events, and visitors can spend time with livestock, including chickens, donkeys, and pigs, to get a hands-on feel for life on the prairie in the early 20th century.

In addition to the Heritage Farmstead Museum, Plano’s art scene offers plenty to explore. Stop by the free ArtCentre of Plano, located in the historic Saigling House in Haggard Park. This cozy museum hosts rotating exhibitions by both North Texas and nationally recognized artists, along with a steady stream of artist talks and immersive programming.

Speaking of special events—plan your trip right, and you’ll have the chance to attend one of Plano’s most famous festivals. Every September, over 100,000 people head to Plano to see the city’s skies filled with colorful hot air balloons at the Plano Balloon Festival.

“As one of Plano’s premier annual celebrations, this event features dozens of hot air balloons, nightly balloon glows, skydiving demonstrations, fireworks, and live musical entertainment, including a performance by the Plano Symphony Orchestra,” says Moya.

Later in the fall, foodies descend on the city for the Plano Food + Wine Festival, an opportunity to sample the city’s tasty treats. Try the “all the way” buffalo burger to find out what’s kept people coming back to Ye Ole Butcher Shop for over 50 years.

For more global fare, Uchiko (a native son of Austin) has a menu that combines Japanese culinary techniques with Texas flavors.
