From packed stadiums and international fan marches to record-breaking hotel revenue and months of behind-the-scenes preparation, the FIFA World Cup 2026™ brought the community together for an unforgettable chapter in The American Dream City’s story.

AT&T Stadium hosted nine matches, drawing a total attendance of 631,048. But the action extended far beyond the stadium gates. During the Sept. 29 City Council work session, Deputy City Manager Jennifer Wichmann presented Arlington’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ wrap-up report, highlighting the citywide coordination, economic impact and departmental efforts that helped make the tournament a success.

A global event with a local impact

The World Cup brought a significant wave of visitors and economic activity to Arlington. Brent DeRaad, President and CEO of the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the City Council that June sales tax collections reached $22.6 million, up 29.5% from 2025, while July collections totaled $19.9 million, an increase of 28.9%. He also highlighted the City’s efforts to support local businesses through downtown promotions, marketing resources and networking opportunities designed to attract visitors, increase visibility and encourage future investment.

Higher sales tax collections in June and July brought more revenue to Arlington than the same months in 2025. By law, the City dedicates portions of its sales tax revenue to specific purposes, including street maintenance, economic development and sports venue debt payments. The remaining portion helps fund everyday services such as police, fire protection, parks and libraries, so not all additional revenue is available for general spending.

Hotels recorded $31.1 million in room revenue in June and $25.9 million in July, making both months standouts for the local hospitality industry. The night of June 17, when England faced Croatia, made history with $2.17 million in hotel room revenue — the highest single-night total in Arlington’s history at that time. Hotels, rideshare services, bars and restaurants were among the businesses benefiting from the influx of visitors.

Behind every match, a city working together

Hosting a global sporting event requires more than opening the stadium doors. It takes careful coordination across departments to manage crowds, maintain public spaces, prepare for emergencies and keep the city operating.

Public safety: Arlington police handled 740 calls for service, removed 65 unauthorized drones and made 52 arrests. Fire and emergency medical personnel filled 1,273 operational positions and staffed 107 advanced life support positions for matchday operations.
Public health: Teams deployed cooling resources, hydration messaging and medical support to help visitors manage the summer heat. Public Works staff also monitored stormwater quality at 11 locations around the Entertainment District.
Fan marches: Six marches celebrated the Netherlands, Sweden, Jordan, Egypt, Spain and Austria, bringing international team spirit into Arlington’s streets. Police, Fire, Public Works and Parks staff coordinated traffic, pedestrian safety, street cleaning and emergency access.
Transportation improvements: The City and the North Central Texas Council of Governments collaborated on $18.5 million in mobility improvements. These included the installation or upgrade of 38 traffic detection systems, 38 applied information preemption and controller connectivity redundancy systems, and 36 Bluetooth signal cabinet locks and monitoring systems. The work also included pedestrian countdown heads at 40 intersections and 139 streetlights installed or upgraded. New traffic signal technology, pedestrian safety barriers, streetlights and a Traffic Management Center added to Arlington’s long-term infrastructure.
A welcoming Entertainment District: City employees maintained public spaces, removed debris and enhanced landscaping to keep the district clean and ready for visitors throughout the tournament.

The final whistle is only the beginning

Arlington’s World Cup story also includes improvements that will continue serving residents long after the crowds have gone home.
