While students may know UT President Jim Davis, some may not know about the group driving some of the significant changes on campus this year. From approving a policy regulating \u201ccontroversial topics<\/a>\u201d in classrooms to the creation of a new School of Computing<\/a>, the UT System Board of Regents has significant influence over the University.<\/p>\n

With the next Board of Regents meeting spanning Nov. 18 to 19, The Texan took a closer look at UT System websites to learn more about each regent.<\/p>\n

The board oversees the finances and policies of 13 institutions under the UT System and meets four times a year, in February, May, August and November, and sometimes holds special meetings. Meeting agendas and videos can be found on their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, the board is responsible for everything that happens at the institution,\u201d Michael DeCesare, a senior program officer at the American Association of University Professors, said.<\/p>\n

The board has ten members: nine voting members and one student regent. The governor appoints all board members for a six-year term after Senate approval, except the student regent, who serves a one-year term. The body normally votes unanimously.<\/p>\n

Chairman Kevin P. Eltife leads the board, oversees meetings and appoints committees. Members elect the chairman and two vice chairs. The student regent represents a UT System institution and can participate in meetings but cannot vote.<\/p>\n

Eltife, a real estate investor from Tyler, Texas, joined the UT board in 2017. He became chairman in December 2018. Eltife, a former Republican state senator and mayor, has supported Davis\u2019s efforts to reshape the core curriculum. His term expires in February 2027.<\/p>\n

Vice Chairman Janiece Longoria is a Houston attorney who previously served on the board from 2008 to 2011 before being appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott in 2017. Vice Chairman James C. \u201cRad\u201d Weaver joined the UT Board in 2017 and is the CEO of a San Antonio investment firm. Both members became vice chairmen in 2019, with terms on the Board expiring in February 2029.<\/p>\n

Many members come from investing backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Regent Stuart W. Stedman joined the board in 2021 and is president of his family\u2019s investment office with interests in oil and gas, properties and assets. He previously chaired the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board from 2019 to 2021. His term expires in February 2027. <\/p>\n

Regent Robert P. Gauntt joined in 2023 and is an investor who played baseball at UT and will leave the board at the end of his term in February 2029. Regent Jodie Lee Jiles works in commercial real estate and spent 26 years in investment banking.<\/p>\n

The other regents come from industries spanning medicine, law and energy.<\/p>\n

Regent Nolan Perez, a gastroenterologist and former U.S. Navy veteran from Harlingen, Texas, joined the board in 2019. His term expires in February 2027. Regent Christina Melton Crain is an attorney and the first woman to chair the Texas Board of Criminal Justice. Regent Kelcy L. Warren is an energy executive who chairs the Board of Directors of Energy Transfer.
Crain, Jiles and Warren were all reappointed in 2025 with terms expiring in 2031.<\/p>\n

Student Regent Jeremiah Clarke is a junior Plan II and international relations and global studies student who began his term on the board in June.<\/p>\n

Clarke served as a University-wide representative in Student Government and worked as a policy analyst for state Sen. Donna Campbell, R-New Braunfels, during the 89th Legislative Session.
