The moisture, combined with instability, is why scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this evening and tonight. The area most likely to experience severe storms is generally east of the Interstate 27 – Highway 87 corridor.

Heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding, especially in the areas highlighted on this map.(KCBD First Alert)

With so much moisture available, storms will be efficient rain producers. If more than one storm moves over an area flooding becomes more likely. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect through Wednesday for the northeastern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area and through Thursday night for the southern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. These areas may receive two or more inches of rain.

The main severe threat across most of the area is strong wind gusts. For eastern areas, especially off the Caprock, large hail is also a concern. And while the risk is low, an isolated brief tornado cannot be ruled out, mainly over the northern Rolling Plains and the southeastern Texas Panhandle.

<img decoding="async" class="figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block" fetchpriority="low" loading="lazy" alt="The earlier Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been cancelled. A new Watch covers the three counties highlighted in the southern viewing area until 2 AM CDT Wednesday.(KCBD First Alert)

Another round of showers and a few embedded thunderstorms are expected before sunrise Thursday morning and lift northeastward throughout the day. Cooler and more stable conditions will keep the severe threat relatively low, though an instance or two of large hail is still possible, especially off the Caprock.

After Thursday, the story begins shifting again. A strong early season cold front will push southward through West Texas Thursday. Behind the front, a much cooler air mass will rush into our area. Showers and storms will continue ahead of the front, mainly over the Rolling Plains, with a continuing potential for heavy rain off the Caprock.

Behind the front, strong north winds will develop Thursday afternoon and continue into Friday. Sustained speeds near 30 mph are possible.

<img decoding="async" class="figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block" fetchpriority="low" loading="lazy" alt="Significant weather changes in the days ahead! BE WEATHER AWARE!(KCBD First Alert)

Temperatures will plummet, with lows Thursday night dropping into the 40s across much of the South Plains. Friday will be the coolest day, with highs only reaching the upper 50s in and near Lubbock.

The chilliest night, and it will be quite chilly, will be Friday night. Saturday morning temperatures will dip into the west and north of Lubbock. It’s possible the far northwestern viewing area, especially around Friona, Muleshoe, and Dimmitt, may briefly dip to near freezing.

Saturday will stay quite cool with highs in the 50s and 60s. Weekend conditions overall, however, will be dry and pleasant. Saturday and Sunday winds are expected to be light with a mix of sun and clouds.

In summary, scattered storms tonight and Wednesday with the potential for heavy rain, especially east of I-27. Then a significant cooldown that will last through the weekend.

Copyright 2026 KCBD.
