Finding community on campus can be challenging for non-Christians. However, some Jewish students have found community through TCU Hillel. Of the approximately 13,000 students on campus, about 75 are involved in TCU Hillel.

Jennifer Roosth, TCU’s Jewish community advisor, said community is one of the most important things a student can find on campus, whether they are Jewish or not.

“We are a small but mighty group,” Roosth said. “One of our biggest goals is making sure Jewish students know that Hillel is here for them. We want students to feel comfortable reaching out, getting involved and finding their place within the TCU Jewish community.”

Roosth said her focus is on building personal connections with students.

“We spend time getting to know students individually, whether that means taking them out for coffee or a meal or simply finding time to connect and talk,” Roosth said.

TCU Hillel is part of Hillel International, an organization that provides community and engagement opportunities for Jewish students on college campuses worldwide.

The organization holds monthly events throughout the semester with a focus on creating a warm and welcoming space for Jewish students. Members celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as a group, hosting dinners featuring traditional Jewish foods.

Hillel International tracked 2,334 antisemitic incidents on college campuses globally during the 2024-2025 academic year, the highest number recorded since the organization began tracking incidents in 2019. The increase comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Despite this, Roosth said students have said they are happy to be on a campus where they can find community through TCU Hillel and openly celebrate their Jewish identity.

“I have heard from many students that they are proud to tell people they are Jewish at TCU,” Roosth said. “I know that the experience can be different on other college campuses, but from what I have seen and heard from our students, they feel fortunate to be part of the TCU community.”

Hanukkah is the next major holiday on the Jewish calendar. Roosth has already begun planning a community event to celebrate the holiday.

Finding community on campus can be challenging for non-Christians.
