Amber Guyger, the ex-Dallas cop who murdered her neighbor in his own home <\/a>after she accidentally walked into the wrong apartment in 2018, was released from a Texas prison Friday on parole.<\/p>\n

Guyger, 38, strolled out of the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville after serving seven of her 10-year sentence, NBC News reported<\/a>, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.<\/p>\n

The convicted killer will spend the rest of her sentence outside in the community, according to the department.<\/p>\n

The former cop, who is white, was found guilty by a jury in October 2019 for fatally shooting Botham Jean \u2014 her 26-year-old unarmed black neighbor \u2014 after mistakenly entering his apartment.<\/p>\n

Jean\u2019s family was annoyed with Guyger\u2019s early prison release \u2014 but had long been enraged by the light sentence, according to an attorney for the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were opposed to her early release because we wanted her to at least do a maximum amount of time, the full 100%,\u201d attorney Lee Merritt told NBC Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we realized that that was not always something that we were not guaranteed so it\u2019s frustrating. But for the family, the frustration came at the point where she was sentenced to [just] 10 years, not just the release today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guyger already had a place to live and work lined up prior to her release, one of her trial attorneys Robert L. Rogers told WFAA-TV<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been remorseful. She\u2019s stayed remorseful. She\u2019s still remorseful,\u201d Rogers said.<\/p>\n

A four-year member of the Dallas PD<\/a>, Guyger returned home after 15-hour shift on the night of Sept. 6, 2018.<\/p>\n

The cop, who lived one floor below Jean, testified that she parked on the wrong floor and accidentally walked into his apartment. <\/p>\n

Jean, who worked as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, was watching television in his living room at the time when, WFAA-TV reported, based on information from prosecutors.<\/p>\n

Guyger said she tried to use her key but the apartment door pushed open. Once she saw Jean, she began fearing for her life and thought he was a burglar \u2014 before she pulled out her weapon and gunned him down. <\/p>\n

She was off-duty but in uniform at the time of the shooting<\/a> and was fired from the police force.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Guyger was a four-year Dallas Police Department officer at the time of the shooting. AP<\/p>\n

The jury found Guyger guilty of murder after deliberating for less than a day.<\/p>\n

Her freedom comes around two weeks after the Texas parole board approved her release on Oct. 1 \u2014 despite being previously denied parole in September 2024, NBC reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dallas Police Department understands this decision may bring renewed attention and emotion surrounding the tragic death of Botham Jean,\u201d Dallas police said in a statement on Oct. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts remain with the Jean family and all those impacted by his loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time Guyger\u2019s parole was granted, Jean\u2019s family released a statement through their attorney that said: \u201cReleasing Ms Guyger after seven years makes that loss feel even smaller in the eyes of the system. It is not smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n
