The driver pulled over and called for help. Officers found Maciel on the right side of the highway, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators initially received information that Maciel may have fallen from a truck, but evidence at the scene led them to believe a passing vehicle struck him. Police said he appeared to have been crossing the highway from east to west.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators believe the crash happened between 10 p.m. Wednesday and midnight.
