Why today’s game matters

No. 7 Texas returns home Saturday looking to rebound from a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma when it hosts a Florida team trying to stop a two-game skid of its own. Both programs entered October with momentum, but this matchup now feels critical in the SEC race.

The Longhorns are led by quarterback Arch Manning, who has thrown for 1,125 yards and 10 touchdowns. While Texas averages a modest 31.4 points per game, its defense has carried the load, allowing just 16.0 points and 264.4 yards per contest. The challenge will be slowing Florida’s balanced offense, which ranks among the nation’s most productive units at 41.7 points and 473.8 yards per game.

The Gators rely heavily on quarterback Aaron Philo and running back Jadan Baugh, who has rushed for 672 yards and 12 touchdowns. But Florida’s defense has been a concern, allowing 29.0 points per game and ranking near the bottom of the FBS against the pass.

The matchup may come down to whether Florida can pressure Manning and avoid the defensive breakdowns that surfaced in losses to Missouri and South Carolina. If Texas controls the line of scrimmage, the Longhorns have an opportunity to regain momentum before a pivotal showdown with Ole Miss next week.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns host the Florida Gators Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
