That is not the case, though.

Here’s everything you need to know about voter suspense.

WHAT IS THE VOTER SUSPENSE LIST?

Suspense means your county does not know your address or thinks you moved, typically because a voter registration card or jury summons sent through mail is returned as undeliverable.

New voter registration cards are mailed every two years to the most recent address on record. If you did not receive a new certification card, it could mean you moved without updating your address.

The list was created more than 30 years ago as a response to the National Voter Registration Act, which requires states to maintain accurate voter rolls. Most states have similar systems in place.

HOW MANY VOTERS ARE SUSPENDED?

More than 9% of the 19 million registered voters in Texas are on the suspense list, according to the secretary of state’s office. That’s up a little since March, when about 6% of voters were suspended.

In Dallas County, more than 155,000 voters are suspended. Collin County has 64,000 suspended voters, and Denton County has more than 73,000. In Tarrant County, more than 103,000 voters are suspended.

HOW DO I CHECK MY STATUS?

Check your registration on the state’s portal or your county’s voter website. Suspended voters will see their status listed as “suspense.”

I’M ON THE SUSPENSE LIST. HOW DO I VOTE?

It’s too late to get off the suspense list by the midterm election — that deadline was Oct. 5 — but you can still vote.

If you have moved within the same county, you will be required to fill out a statement of residence form, which should be available at every polling location. That form will be used to update your voter registration, and you should be removed from the suspense list by the next election.

It’s trickier if you have moved to a different county. In that case, you can vote using a limited ballot, which includes state and federal races but no local races. Here’s the catch: Limited ballots are only available during early voting, which runs Oct. 19 to Oct. 30. Voters will not be able to cast a limited ballot on Election Day on Nov. 3.

On Election Day, you will instead have to submit a provisional ballot, which is used to record a vote when there are questions about a voter’s eligibility that must be resolved before a vote can count.

To have your provisional ballot counted in Texas, you are required to visit your county’s registrar office within six days of the election to show an acceptable form of ID. You will be notified within 30 days of the election whether your provisional ballot was counted.

HOW LONG CAN I STAY ON THE SUSPENSE LIST?

You will be removed from Texas’ voter rolls following two general elections for the state and county on the suspense list, or roughly four years.

DALLAS — Days before early voting is set to begin, Texas’ voter suspense list climbed to nearly 1.8…

[10
116,118,117
post-469373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth-headlines","tag-fort-worth-news
["GET
