More than a free gallery, Centro de Artes is a place where Latino life, memory, identity, creativity and importance in our city is not just acknowledged but centered.

This year, Centro de Artes marks 10 years of city-managed exhibitions and programs. In that time, the gallery has presented more than 28 exhibitions showcasing 3,180 artworks by more than 600 artists.

While these numbers matter, they don’t fully capture what it’s like to experience art that reflects one’s own traditions, histories and experiences.

Every day, our team gets to witness the power of that reflection. We see young people encountering artists who share their cultural references. We work with emerging artists seeing their work displayed in a public gallery for the first time. We also partner with longtime artists whose voices have gone unheard for too long, providing them a platform that recognizes the depth, evolution and legacy of their creative journeys.

We also get to support curators of all experience levels who take on the challenge of shaping ambitious exhibitions and discovering all that they are capable of along the way.

That is why Centro de Artes is more than an accessible art gallery. It is a springboard that opens doors, amplifies voices and shows how transformative art can be in people’s lives. It lives up to what all public galleries should strive for: not only to celebrate accomplished careers but also to help create them.

Centro de Artes’ purpose is inseparable from where it stands today. The building first opened in 1922 as a Produce Market Annex, part of the commercial heart of Market Square, where families and artisans have long made, sold and shared their work.

These roots make the gallery’s 10th-anniversary exhibition, “Mercado/Material,” especially fitting. Curated by Mia Lopez, the exhibition explores the visual language of open-air markets, bodegas and grocery stores through artwork that includes hand-lettered signs, textile sculptures and mediums that remind us of markets and their materials.

Featuring more than a dozen artists from Texas, Chicago and New York City, the show examines the ways Latino communities shop, work and come together in marketplaces.

For Lopez, this exhibition brings her career full circle. She began as an emerging arts professional at Museo Alameda, in this very building, and now returns as curator of the milestone anniversary exhibition. Her journey is a powerful example of how cultural spaces can nurture talent over time, offering early opportunities, and sustaining them as artists and curators grow.

As San Antonio grows, we must keep investing in the places that connect us to our history while shaping our future. Centro de Artes is one of those places: community-informed, accessible and rooted in the cultural life of our city.

Krystal Jones is executive director of the city of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture.

One of the first places you see when entering Historic Market Square is Centro de Artes.
