Welcome back one last time to The Landry Hat’s series covering the best Dallas Cowboys players to wear every jersey number from No. 0 all the way up to No. 99.

At long last, we’ve reached the end of our journey, and while we wish we could say we had an intriguing entry to close things out here at No. 99, the truth is that this number simply doesn’t have any sort of legendary lineage.

Nevertheless, we still have one final job to do, so let’s go ahead and get rolling by first looking at everyone who’s worn the double nines for America’s Team over the years.

Willie Blade, DTKevin Brooks, DE/DTChris Canty, DEKenyon Coleman, DENathan Davis, DEChad Eaton, DTChauncey Golston, LB/DEJustin Hamilton, DTDavid Howard, LBHurvin McCormack, DTIgor Olshansky, DELT Overton, DTRyan Russell, DEGeorge Selvie, DECharles Tapper, DEPerrion Winfrey, DTAntwaun Woods, DT

As this is our last entry, let’s run our little Olympic podium exercise one final time, shall we?

On the bronze stand, we’ve got defensive lineman Kevin Brooks, who played both defensive end and defensive tackle during his four-year run in Dallas from 1985 to 1988, recording 12.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles in 48 appearances.

On the silver stand, we’ve got defensive tackle Antwaun Woods, who tallied 80 total tackles and 2.5 sacks in 39 regular-season appearances for the Cowboys from 2018 to 2020, adding seven tackles in two postseason contests.

But the easy call here on the gold stand here at No. 99 is Chris Canty.

Chris Canty spent four solid seasons with the Dallas Cowboys

A back-to-back Second-Team All-ACC selection at the University of Virginia in 2002 and 2003, Canty was taken by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft with the 132nd overall selection.

The 6-foot-7, 320-pounder was actually seen as a possible first-round pick heading into his senior season with the Cavaliers, but he unfortunately suffered a severe injury just a few weeks into the 2004 campaign, tearing the ACL, MCL, and PCL in his left knee. And suffering a detached retina in his left eye in January 2005 after being hit with a bottle during an altercation at a nightclub certainly didn’t improve his draft status either.

Despite the injuries, Canty was able to fully participate in his first camp with the Cowboys, and while he only started two games as a rookie, he contributed nicely with 36 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. What’s wild is that even starting all 16 games at right defensive end in his second season, his numbers actually went down, as he tallied 33 total tackles and one single sack.

He had his best overall season with the Cowboys in 2007, recording 43 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, a pair of passes defended, and 3.5 sacks in helping the team to a 13-3 record and its first division title in nine years, adding three tackles and a sack in an upset loss to the New York Giants in the Divisional Round of the postseason.

Canty followed up with another solid season in 2008, amassing 37 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a career-high eight QB hits, 3.0 sacks, and a career-best five passes defended.

But with Dallas having already given Jay Ratliff a lucrative contract extension and another lucrative extension coming for DeMarcus Ware, Canty was allowed to waltz into free agency in 2009, and he got himself a high-paying deal of his own, inking a six-year, $42 million contract with the aforementioned Giants, with whom he ultimately spent four years and helped win a Super Bowl. He then spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens to close out his career.

And that’s all she wrote, folks. We’d like to thank you for coming on this journey with us here at The Landry Hat, and if you happened to miss any of the previous entries in this series or just want to go back and revisit some of your favorites, you can find all of the others below.
