Barrios says Congress should focus on the rising cost of living and find common ground to address problems facing families.

On the federal debt, which exceeds $40 trillion, Yarbrough said the government should cut wasteful spending and eliminate programs that do not produce results rather than raise taxes. Barrios said lawmakers should review federal programs, reduce waste and close tax loopholes. He also called for examining both spending and revenue to address the debt over the long term.

Immigration is a central concern for Yarbrough, who wants stronger enforcement of federal law, opposes amnesty and favors changes to legal immigration programs he says put American workers at a disadvantage.

Barrios identified affordability as the district’s biggest challenge. He pointed to the cost of housing, healthcare, education and raising children.

His proposals include lowering prescription drug costs, increasing the housing supply, investing in infrastructure and job training, and pursuing more stable trade policies.

On military action, both candidates said Congress has a responsibility to oversee decisions about war while recognizing the president’s authority to respond to immediate threats.

Yarbrough said the president must be able to act when American forces or interests face danger. Barrios said Congress should vote on whether to authorize continued military action in Iran.

They also outlined different approaches to artificial intelligence and social media. Yarbrough called for reviewing legal protections for social media companies, strengthening protections for children and maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. Barrios wants stronger privacy protections, parental controls and greater accountability for technology companies, while protecting free speech.

Yarbrough holds bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and government from the University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from Stanford Law School. He and his wife, Elizabeth, founded Saint Francis Academy, a classical Christian school. He serves in the Air Force Reserve.

Barrios holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Governors University and a master’s degree in strategic management from the University of North Texas. He served on the Richardson City Council from May 2023 until September 2026 and said he has lived in the district for 21 years. He also volunteered with the American Red Cross for more than 13 years.

Early voting ahead of the general election on Nov. 3 begins on Monday and will run through Oct. 30.
