{"id":469923,"date":"2026-10-18T19:28:12","date_gmt":"2026-10-18T19:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/469923\/"},"modified":"2026-10-18T19:28:12","modified_gmt":"2026-10-18T19:28:12","slug":"gators-re-enter-ap-top-25-at-no-20-after-upset-of-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/469923\/","title":{"rendered":"Gators re-enter AP Top 25 at No. 20 after upset of Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Florida\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2026\/10\/17\/florida-gators-jon-sumrall-texas-longhorns-sec-trammel-jones-arch-manning-jadan-baugh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upset win at No. 7 Texas<\/a> propelled the Gators back into the AP Top 25 at No. 20, a week after Jon Sumrall\u2019s team fell out of the rankings following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2026\/10\/10\/florida-gators-football-jon-sumrall-sec-south-carolina-gamecocks-shane-beamer-lanorris-sellers-aaron-philo-bailey-stockton-jadan-baugh-nyck-harbor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homecoming loss to South Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 10.5-point underdog Saturday, the Gators overcame a deficits of 10-0 and 17-3 behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2026\/10\/17\/gators-texas-longhorns-arch-manning-tramell-jones-jr-jon-sumrall-mike-bianchi-commentary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first-time starting quarterback Tramell Jones Jr.<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2026\/10\/18\/florida-gators-jon-sumrall-texas-longhorns-sec\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resurgent defense<\/a> that sacked Longhorns\u2019 star Arch Manning five times and held the Longhorns to 272 yards in a 27-24 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u00a0 (5-2, 3-2 SEC) climbed to No. 8 in the AP Top 25 after routing Ole Miss 52-28 on Sept. 26 in the Swamp, earning its highest ranking since the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Gators promptly lost 45-17 at Missouri, dropping them to No. 16, before suffering a 38-19 loss against struggling South Carolina, ending the Gamecocks\u2019 eight-game SEC losing streak.<\/p>\n<p>Florida responded with its first road win against a top 10-team since 2012 at Florida State, while Jones became the first Gators\u2019 quarterback to pick up his first win on the road since Jesse Palmer in 1997 at Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>The Gators now enter their bye week to recuperate after playing seven straight games and turn their attention to an\u00a0 Oct. 31 matchup in Atlanta with No. 5 Georgia. The Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1) lost their No. 1 ranking after losing 27-24 Saturday at Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>Florida sits a spot behind No. 19 Texas and two spots ahead of No. 22 Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the bye week because you get to take a deep dive into where are we playing well, where are we not?,\u201d Sumrall said. \u201cWho deserves more opportunities? Who may deserve less?
