That is precisely why we wanted to ask the practical questions out loud.

We visited Gameday Men’s Health in Northwest El Paso to learn what happens before a man begins testosterone therapy, what a PSA blood test involves and what someone can expect when he walks into a clinic focused specifically on men’s health.

Max, who spoke with us on behalf of the clinic, explained that Gameday focuses on men’s health rather than providing primary care.

“We focus solely on men’s health,” he said.

During our conversation, Max described services including testosterone replacement therapy, peptides, hair-loss care and medical weight management. The clinic also offers services related to sexual wellness, vitamin therapy and sports injuries.

The process begins with an evaluation of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, lab results and personal health goals.

The blood test that comes before treatment

The part that caught our attention was the screening that happens before testosterone treatment is considered.

Max said the clinic checks a patient’s prostate-specific antigen, commonly called PSA, before beginning testosterone therapy. PSA is a protein produced by cells in the prostate, and its level can be measured through a blood test.

“It’s a simple blood draw,” Max said.

That blood draw can start an important health conversation, but a PSA result is not a cancer diagnosis by itself. A higher PSA level can be associated with prostate cancer, but it may also be caused by other conditions, including an enlarged prostate or inflammation.

An abnormal result may lead to repeat testing or additional evaluation to better understand what is happening.

Prostate screening is also not one-size-fits-all. Men should speak with a qualified health care professional about the potential benefits and limitations of screening while considering factors such as age, family history, personal risk and individual preferences.

When a testosterone visit reveals another concern

Max told us the clinic has found elevated PSA levels in men who originally came in to ask about testosterone therapy.

“We’ve caught a lot of guys who have a very high PSA that otherwise they never knew,” he said.

He explained that some of the men seeking care had gone a long time without regular screenings or a primary care provider. That detail stayed with us. Sometimes the reason someone finally walks through a clinic door is not the only health concern that needs attention.

An elevated PSA does not automatically mean someone has cancer. The result must be interpreted in context, and appropriate medical follow-up matters. Gameday also made it clear during the segment that it is not a primary care practice.

For men considering testosterone therapy, the conversation should not stop at one lab number. A diagnosis of testosterone deficiency generally involves both relevant symptoms and consistently low testosterone levels confirmed through appropriate testing. Patients should also discuss potential risks, monitoring and prostate health with a qualified medical provider before beginning treatment.

Understanding the numbers and the next step

Max said Gameday’s consultation process includes a conversation about what the patient hopes to address. Some men may be concerned about energy, strength, weight, longevity or hair loss.

The provider then reviews the patient’s health information and determines which options, if any, may be medically appropriate.

Keith, who identified himself during the segment as the owner of the El Paso operation, put the clinic’s approach simply.

“We believe every man should know his levels and not just get his levels, but know what to do with them,” he said.

At the time of filming, Keith said the El Paso clinic had been operating for a little more than two years and that a second location was on the way. Gameday now has locations in Northwest El Paso on Remcon Circle and East El Paso on Trawood Drive.

The clinic also stated during our visit that its initial consultation and certain screening tests were being offered at no charge. Promotional offers, included tests and eligibility may change, so patients should confirm the current details directly with the clinic before scheduling.

Our takeaway was practical: ask the uncomfortable question, get the appropriate lab work and do not let one test result or an online symptom list make a medical decision for you.

Anyone considering PSA screening or testosterone therapy should speak with a qualified health care professional about symptoms, age, family history, possible benefits, potential risks and any follow-up care that may be needed.

Gameday Men’s Health (Courtesy: KFOX14)

El Paso, Texas (KFOX14) — We know prostate screening is not exactly casual conversation.
