Sandwiches are the way to go in Texas barbecue these days. With prices\u00a0<\/a>rising across the menu<\/a>, barbecue sandwiches are an excellent way to get a great meal, eat a ton, and support\u00a0your local restaurants. But who has the best barbecue sandwiches in Texas?<\/p>\n

Texas Monthly’s barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn published his list of the best barbecue sandwiches in Texas<\/a> on October 2, and one San Antonio smokehouse earned a nod from the BBQ critic. Smoke Shack BBQ on Broadway<\/a> earned praise for its barbecue grilled cheese sandwich, which Vaughn calls the best in the state.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m not sure whether Smoke Shack originated the brisket grilled cheese sandwich, but it was the first place I saw serving one,” Vaughn writes. “Let\u2019s clear up one thing first: Every brisket grilled cheese can more accurately be described as a brisket melt. This one gets plenty of chopped brisket on buttered Texas toast with American cheese slices that give it proper gooeyness. Try the classic version or get it ‘Steve-Mo’\u00a0style, with saut\u00e9ed onions and jalape\u00f1os.”<\/p>\n

Austin took home five of the sandwich spots, but Smoke Shack was San Antonio’s sole representative.<\/p>\n

If you haven’t visited the Broadway smokehouse, make sure you go to the A-framed building painted like the Texas flag, not the Smoke Shack DelicaTexan right next door. You’ll find delicious sandwiches, but not the barbecue grilled cheese.<\/p>\n

As for the grilled cheese itself, guests can either get the standalone sandwich for $12 or make it a plate for $14.50. Comparatively, a half pound of brisket without any sides or cheesy goodness currently goes for $16, according to Smoke Shack’s menu<\/a>. So, the sandwiches save you a couple bucks and still give you a tasty meal.<\/p>\n
