LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows kicked off his campaign tour with a rally dubbed \u201cOne Party. One Mission. Strike Force\u201d at the American Windmill Museum on Monday, as he seeks re-election while working to defend his party\u2019s majority.<\/p>\n
Burrows told supporters the election will shape Texas\u2019 future, pointing to his family as his motivation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do you need to vote this cycle \u2014 and for all of you that can be different \u2014 but I\u2019m going to tell you what my why is. It\u2019s my three little boys right there,\u201d Burrows said. \u201cWhen I think about the future of Texas, I think about the future they\u2019re going to inherit. This election is going to determine it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Burrows plans to travel nearly 2,000 miles through more than two dozen communities from West Texas to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, the Greater Houston region, the Gulf Coast, South Texas and Central Texas.<\/p>\n
Williams focuses on affordability<\/p>\n
Democrat Malik Williams is challenging Burrows to represent District 83 in the State House.<\/p>\n
In an interview with KCBD NewsChannel 11\u2019s James Eppler, Williams said affordability is one of the biggest issues facing Texans, pitching legalizing THC to boost revenue and expanding health coverage.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we legalize it, regulate it and tax it, we can use that revenue to help fund public education and give teachers a much-needed pay raise,\u201d Williams said. \u201cLet\u2019s expand the ACA here, where the federal government pays 90% of the bill and Texas only has to pay 10%, so millions of individuals here in our state can have health insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n
