The pressure surrounding Arch Manning<\/a> has reached a new level in Austin, where two disappointing defeats have transformed the conversation from a potential national championship run to whether the Texas Longhorns<\/a> need a change at quarterback.<\/p>\n

Manning remains the starter, but head coach Steve Sarkisian is reportedly considering adjustments after an inconsistent stretch that has damaged Texas’ College Football Playoff ambitions.<\/p>\n

Arch Manning has a chance to shake up the Heisman race against Ohio State<\/p>\n

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, redshirt freshman KJ Lacey is expected to receive additional first-team practice repetitions this week, creating competition for a position Manning appeared to have firmly secured.<\/p>\n

The development follows losses to Oklahoma and Florida, a dramatic reversal after Texas opened its campaign with impressive victories over top-ranked Ohio State and No.14 Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Manning’s latest performance against Florida offered little reassurance about an offense struggling to rediscover its early-season rhythm.<\/p>\n

The junior completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown, but Texas failed to generate enough production to avoid another defeat.<\/p>\n

A week earlier, Manning threw two interceptions against Oklahoma, adding to concerns about his decision-making under pressure.<\/p>\n

Sarkisian made clear that no aspect of the offense would be exempt from scrutiny.<\/p>\n

“I just felt like we didn’t play good offensive football and we’re not playing great offensive football right now, so everything is going to be evaluated,” Sarkisian told reporters.\u00a0“It’s like, I have to evaluate everything.”<\/p>\n

Lacey, a former four-star prospect from Alabama, is regarded as a capable passer with the athleticism to extend plays when protection breaks down.<\/p>\n

Is Arch Manning ready for 2027 NFL Draft?<\/p>\n

Manning’s struggles have also prompted renewed scrutiny from professional evaluators who once viewed him as a leading candidate to become the first overall selection in 2027.<\/p>\n

Through six games, he has thrown 11 touchdown passes and five interceptions, completing approximately 64 percent of his attempts while taking 17 sacks.<\/p>\n

An AFC scouting director questioned one particularly poor decision against Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

“Bad decision, bad mechanics, bad throw,” the evaluator told Yahoo Sports.\u00a0“But he did some good things in that game. Really good. That’s where you’re kind of stuck as an evaluator. Like, how do I judge this?”<\/p>\n

An NFC scout expressed similar concerns about Manning’s ability to consistently process defensive coverages and deliver accurate passes.<\/p>\n

“He’s athletic. He has the tools, but it’s still coming together,” the scout said.\u00a0“Right now he’s not ready, just as a complete prospect, of reading coverages, making good decisions and delivering accurate balls on a consistent basis.”<\/p>\n

Could Arch Manning return to Texas?<\/p>\n

Manning’s development has attracted extraordinary attention because of his family’s football history.<\/p>\n

He is the grandson of former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning and nephew of Super Bowl champions Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.<\/p>\n

However, scouts have cautioned against allowing those connections to accelerate expectations about his professional readiness.<\/p>\n

“I think we tend to rush [Manning’s] development just because of his last name,” the NFC evaluator said.\u00a0“I don’t think it’s there yet. There’s a lot more polished guys that are farther along than he is.”<\/p>\n

Another season at Texas could provide Manning with additional development time, although he hasn’t announced whether he intends to enter the draft.<\/p>\n
