Then-No. 12 Texas stood strong (9-7, 5-3 SEC), holding its own on its home court.

That was until the Gators entered the Lone Star State hunting down a win. In a five-set thriller, they did just that and moved up the ranks in the AVCA-Taraflex Division I Poll, returning to the No. 5 spot.

Texas dropped to No. 14, and now, only four teams in the SEC remain undefeated at home.

In Sunday’s showdown, the Gators coordinated a season-high 72 kills, a season-high 68 assists and had four athletes with double-digit kills for the first time this year.

One middle blocker in particular took the opportunity to shine – junior Alec Rothe – tallying a career-high in kills (17) and points (21). She sits at 80 blocks on the year and earned the title of SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. Rothe is fourth overall in the SEC for blocks and eighth for hitting percentage (.442).

Matching Rothe’s 17 kills against the Longhorns and anchoring the offense was senior outside hitter Kamryn Chaney. Junior opposite hitter Logan King also rose to the challenge, with a season-high 16 kills and notched her third double-double this season.

Those milestones came with some help from junior setter Taylor Parks, who had a notable night herself, recording a career-high 59 assists and maintaining a .571 hitting percentage.

Parks has several accolades attached to her name, ranking fifth in the SEC for assists (averaging 10.21 per set), fifth for service aces (averaging .42 per set) and seventh for hitting percentage (.462).

The Gators logged 24 errors against the Longhorns, and in recent matches, it has been their weak spot.

The Gators averaged 15 errors per match through the first eight outings of the year.In the last seven contests, that average has increased to 22.3 errors. As Florida progresses through the season, it will have to focus on keeping the errors under control to remain a threat to the rest of the country.

Florida’s next challenge will be at home against Louisiana State on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

Contact Nicole Scura at nscura@alligator.org.
