The Northern Lights appeared in Texas on Tuesday night. Residents across the Lone Star State may have another chance to see them.<\/p>\n
The Northern Lights \u2013 or aurora borealis \u2013 result from a geomagnetic storm in the atmosphere. When the storm intensifies<\/a>, the lights reach farther south, like they did in Texas on November 11. <\/p>\n Some forecasts suggest<\/a> the displays could return on November 12.<\/p>\n \u201cA surge in charged solar particles is headed for Earth again tonight,\u201d Meteorologist Collin Myers told The Dallas Express. \u201cLast night, skies as far south as Texas and Florida were able to see some color changes on the horizon, and tonight could be the same.\u201d<\/p>\n Northern Lights occur when particles<\/a> from the sun\u2019s atmosphere fly through Earth\u2019s magnetic field, according to Michigan Tech University. When electrons and atoms collide, they create bursts of colorful light.\u00a0<\/p>\n Many Dallas-Fort Worth residents posted bright colors across the skies on November 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Political commentator Glenn Beck, CEO of Irving-based Blaze Media, even took time to appreciate the display.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Some Texans posted vibrant Northern Lights west of the DFW metroplex, in Palo Pinto County<\/a> and Jack County<\/a>. Other residents reported the displays reached<\/a> as far south as San Antonio and Austin<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The upcoming storm is predicted to meet G4 conditions, which makes a severe geomagnetic storm, according to Myers. He said this results from a \u201ccoronal mass ejection\u201d \u2013 an eruption of \u201cclouds\u201d of solar protons, electrons, and magnetic fields from the sun\u2019s outer surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cMany times at incredible speeds,\u201d Myers said. \u201cLast night, some speeds reached 850 km\/second. That\u2019s over 1.8 million miles per hour.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Space weather is hard to predict with certainty, according to Myers.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAlthough it could happen again, it\u2019s still unlikely that we see many G4 or G5 events,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are definitely more rare.\u201d<\/p>\n While some predictions suggest the Northern Lights may return, the night sky will be the ultimate tell.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Northern Lights appeared in Texas on Tuesday night.
