Here is what to know before going to cast a vote.

Where to vote

El Paso County operates under a countywide vote center system, which allows individuals to cast their ballots at any designated location regardless of their home precinct. During the early voting period, voters can visit any early voting site during the designated weekday windows. The times of operation vary by location. This information is available through the El Paso County Elections Department website. On Election Day, polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and anyone who is standing in line by 7:00 p.m. will still be permitted to cast their vote.

Voter identification requirements

When heading to the polls, Texas voters must present an approved photo identification. Acceptable forms of photo ID include a Texas driver’s license, a Texas personal identification card, a Texas handgun license, a Texas election identification certificate, a United States military identification card containing a photograph, a United States citizenship certificate or certificate of naturalization containing a photograph, or a United States passport book or card.

For voters 18 through 69, these approved photo identifications may be expired for no more than four years before being presented at the polling place, while voters aged 70 or older may use an acceptable photo ID that has been expired for any length of time as long as it is otherwise valid.

Those who do not have an approved form of photo identification and cannot obtain one may still vote on a regular ballot by completing a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polling place and providing one of the approved supporting documents. These include a government document showing the voter’s name and address, such as a voter registration certificate, a current utility bill, a bank statement, a government check, a paycheck or a certified domestic birth certificate and other identity-confirming legal documents. Valid reasons for a reasonable impediment include a lack of transportation, disability or illness, a lack of necessary birth certificates or documents, work schedules, family responsibilities, or lost or stolen identification. For those without an approved photo ID, they can apply for a free Election Identification Certificate at any Texas Driver License office.

Alternative voting options

Alternative voting options are also available for specific circumstances. Voters who are elderly, sick or disabled, incarcerated but retain voting rights, or will be out of the county on Election Day may apply for a ballot by mail. Applications for a mail-in ballot must be submitted to the Early Voting Clerk by the deadline, and completed ballots must be received by Election Day.

For voters with physical limitations who cannot enter a polling place without assistance or likelihood of injury, curbside voting is available to bring a voting unit directly to their vehicle at the entrance. Provisional ballots are offered for voters whose registration or identification status is uncertain at the polls, requiring them to visit the El Paso County Elections Department within six calendar days following the election to resolve their status and ensure their vote is counted.

By verifying registration statuses, reviewing sample ballots, and making sure proper identification requirements are met ahead of time through official portals like the El Paso County Elections Department or VoteTexas.gov, every voter can make their voice heard and help shape the future of the local community.

Ximena Cordero is the editor-in-chief for The Prospector and may be reached at [email protected].edu and on LinkedIn @ximenacordero

El Paso County voters can verify their registration status, review sample ballots and make sure proper identification requirements…

[12
138,140,139
post-471957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-el-paso","tag-el-paso","tag-el-paso-headlines","tag-el-paso-news
["GET
