The spending comes as the bullseye recovers from a rough 2025 marked by ongoing inflation and customer boycotts over Target’s discontinuation of diversity programs.

The bullseye has not announced details about the $4.5 million San Antonio renovation, but a May news release detailed the changes customers can expect, including:

An expanded dry grocery selection — and possibly larger fresh and frozen departmentsModern décor and fixtures with specialty LED lighting and new signageNew merchandise displays throughout the storeUpdates to support order pickup, drive-up, and exchanges and returnsUpgrades to the traditional and self-checkout lanesModernized guest amenities including restrooms and designated nursing spaces.Natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting, and more efficient HVAC systems in select locations

New lighting and décor will highlight areas like the beauty aisles.Photo courtesy of Target

Target also says it is “leveling up” its stock across a few key categories, including health and wellness, beauty, baby, home, and women’s fashion.

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” says Laurie Mahowald, Target Properties senior vice president, in a release. “We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today — from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments — while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.

The latter might be a stronger motivator than the customer experience. Target, currently rebounding from its 2025 slump under CEO Michael Fiddelke, noted that remodeled stores have higher traffic and typically experience a sales lift.

But the company will have to wait until next year to see how San Antonio shoppers respond.
