In honor of National School Bus Safety Week, it’s important for families within the Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) to stay safe and know the rules when buses flash their lights.

Sobering Facts About School Bus Accidents

Keeping our children safe when entering or exiting school buses is non-negotiable, yet according to research gathered from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), there were 1,069 total fatalities between 2015 and 2024 that resulted from school-bus-related traffic accidents.

Tragically, 204 school-aged children were included in those fatalities.

Also, from 2000 to 2024, there were 63 people who died after drivers recklessly attempted to pass a stopped school bus, with half of them being pedestrians 18 years old or younger.

How to Stay Safe Around LISD School Buses

This is why DPS encourages all drivers to remember these tips when driving near school buses, especially here in Lubbock:

Always stop when a school bus activates red flashing lights and the extendable stop sign is visible. Drivers can resume travel only when the lights are off or the sign is withdrawnAlways obey decreased speed limits in school zones and be prepared to stop when neededWatch for children when passing near bus stopsPut away cell phones and use extra caution when encountering bus stops and school zones

Here’s another thing to remember: Texas law requires drivers in all lanes in both directions of traffic to stop when a school bus flashes its red lights and extends the stop sign. Only when there is a physical median like grass or a concrete barrier is it permissible for drivers heading the opposite direction to ignore the stopped school bus.

To get a better understanding of when it’s legal to pass a stopped school bus, check out this video from the Montgomery County Pct.5 Constable Facebook page:
