{"id":473972,"date":"2026-10-23T00:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/473972\/"},"modified":"2026-10-23T00:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:40:11","slug":"mayor-jones-wants-federal-officials-to-reconsider-immigration-enforcement-toward-military-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/473972\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Jones wants federal officials to reconsider immigration enforcement toward military families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is urging federal leaders to rethink their approach of enforcing immigration action toward military families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Jones shared a letter sent to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Wednesday, asking them to reconsider \u201cdetaining service members\u2019 spouses and qualified family members as they lawfully seek permanent residence or citizenship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">She also mentioned to give those family members the \u201cstrongest preference\u201d for approving their legal status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cThese families are among the very best of our communities, and it is only to our benefit to embrace their commitment to our country,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Her letter comes after a woman married to a recently enlisted Army serviceman was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/2026\/10\/army-wife-ice-deportation-texas\/689012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/2026\/10\/army-wife-ice-deportation-texas\/689012\/\">The Atlantic<\/a> reported Giovanna Perez was approached by ICE last month as she went to pick up her military ID at the base.
