That Billy Law is back. “Everglow” is out now — his first new solo music in five years and the opening move of “Seconds,” his sophomore album due in February via State Fair Records.

The title does triple duty: second chances, second thoughts and the literal seconds between feeling something and acting on it. It’s a concept record, but there are no cowboys, no spaceships and no rock opera. The drama happens in the kitchen, in the car and in the space behind your ribs.

“The whole album is about these seconds in time that you have between having a feeling and acting on it,” Law tells us. “There’s also this idea of second chances and second-guessing yourself that goes along with that, too.”

Sign up for the Music newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Two promises and everything in between

“Seconds” is built like a pair of bookends holding a million stories in between. The opener, “Always,” is about Law’s wife and the vows they made. The closer, “For Forever,” is a lullaby written for his first daughter.

“All of the songs in between are the kind of messiness in between those two promises,” he says. “There is real life that happens in between, and it’s not as simple as just saying it. You actually have to do it.”

“Everglow,” soon follows “Always,” questioning how true wedding vows are. Law boils the song’s central question down plainly: “Are you still going to be with me even if I screw things up sometimes?”

He wrote it during a rough stretch. “I saw the weight of responsibility to my wife and to my kids, and I just didn’t feel like I was measuring up,” he says. “There was that question, like, ‘Do I even deserve this?’”

He’s quick to admit the logic is broken — treating love like a scorecard.

“There’s this looking at the promise as like a point system, which is a bad way of looking at things,” he admits.

Listen to “Everglow” and you’ll notice it sounds part hymn, part IT ticket. Law sings about bruises he doesn’t remember and “a sensitivity to light,” then pivots to “a fault in the hard drive that shuts the system down.” The tech language is deliberate.

“I think I was trying to logic my way out of the depression,” he says. “I wanted to name it and give it some kind of scientific terms instead of letting it just be some esoteric concept.”

The song never resolves, and Law didn’t want it to. Writing it was “therapeutic” — a way to put a name to what he was fighting. Why lead the new chapter with something this heavy?

“I don’t have a lot of answers in the album, so things are open-ended,” Law says. “It’s pretty bleak and messy.”

Living in the gray

If there’s a thesis buried in “Seconds,” it’s that feelings aren’t the problem. Choices are.

“You can have any kind of feeling about something,” Law says. “But what you do about it is a lot more indicative of who you are than just having a feeling.”

Tech isn’t the only allegory in the album.

“You’re trying to build something,” Law says of looking at it like a house. “It’s certainly not entirely original, so I didn’t want to put it front and center.”

The bleakest corner is “Room,” anchored by the line: “If I’ve locked myself inside the room, why does it feel like I’m on the roof?” Law calls it “slow dissociation,” almost without hesitation.

“It’s like a cartoon when all the color goes out.”

Passion, paychecks and a very loud day job

Law doesn’t talk about music as “the dream.” He talks about it like a craftsman talks about a trade.

“I could always just write songs and go get a 9 to 5,” he says. “But I like the way that it’s pushed me to have those two things be bound together. For me, it’s a driver.”

The five-year gap between records was mostly practical — wrangling musicians, booking studio time and asking a blunt question: “When you go through five years of not releasing anything, you’re kind of irrelevant,” he says. “Am I ever going to get to do this again?”

The answer, recorded at Fort Worth’s Niles City Sound, seems to be a resounding “yes.”

As for juggling the Turks and the tender stuff, he sees them as cousins, not rivals.

“With Billy Law, I try to get people to sit with themselves. Whereas with Turks, I just want people to feel good and have fun,” he says. “I don’t get burned out on being one way on stage.”

The Baby Boys and the East Dallas effect

Backing Law on stage are the Baby Boys, a rotating collective of Dallas players his wife named because the guys are just that polite. It started for practical reasons, then grew into something more. Other songwriters needed backing bands; Law kept saying “use my guys,” and suddenly he had “a little community within a community.” Raised near Casa Linda, he credits rooms like Double Wide and the Granada, but mostly the people inside them.

“Those people, they endure,” he says.

One last confession: on release day, Law refreshes everything. “I check in on it way too much,” he says. “I let it take a huge stock of what I’m worth as an artist. Everything is life and death.”

Fitting, for a guy who just wrote a whole song asking if we’re still on his side. Give “Everglow” a spin.
