A 17-year-old from McKinney is now in federal custody. According to CBS, the teen allegedly planned to target Self at a campaign event.<\/p>\n
Self thanked investigators for intervening.<\/p>\n
“I’m very grateful to the FBI for having taken action because so often we hear somebody does something and then you find out later that the FBI had him on a watch list of some sort and they didn’t take action. So I am very grateful that the FBI took action in this case,” Self said.<\/p>\n
Self also said law enforcement information he has received indicates the suspect is “a 17-year-old male from my hometown, McKinney, who had planned to make waves and perhaps try to shoot at me and have a terrorist attack.”<\/p>\n
Abbott posted on X praising the FBI and saying law enforcement stopped a suspected ISIS-inspired plot before an attack could happen.<\/p>\n
The case has renewed security concerns for elected officials on the campaign trail. One Texas congresswoman said she has already increased security because of threats. Self also posted that he and his family are safe.<\/p>\n
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer called the news “horrifying.” Other officials also responded by thanking the FBI and saying they were grateful Self is OK.<\/p>\n
The teen remains in custody. A federal judge will decide whether he is tried as an adult.<\/p>\n
The threat comes during an election season that has already seen other cases involving alleged threats against Texas political figures. In August, a Fort Worth man was arrested for allegedly threatening Senate candidate James Talarico. Last month, another man was arrested after allegedly threatening Abbott.<\/p>\n
Campaigning continued across Texas today. Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is set to vote in Austin this morning before holding a rally at UT tonight. His Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, has campaign stops planned in Laredo and Selma today. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa is campaigning in Denton as part of her statewide tour, and Abbott has a stop in Lindale for his tour today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AUSTIN, Texas (KEYE) \u2014 Gov.
