Can Colleyville Heritage take down a depleted, No. 3 Argyle squad, more.

                John Rowland

            Special to the Star-Telegram

Week 9 of the Texas high school football season is here, and the playoffs are just around the corner.

Check out the Star-Telegram’s five games to watch:

Colleyville Heritage at Argyle, 7 p.m. Friday

After a one-point loss in its season opener, Argyle (7-1 overall, 4-0 District 3-5A Division II) has been on a serious roll. The Eagles have steam rolled the likes of Terrell (55-27), Highland Park (70-37) and Lucas Lovejoy (48-25), but with the news of starting quarterback Hayes Hackney being ruled ineligible, can Argyle, No. 3 in the state in 5A DII according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Sports, continue its dominance?

Colleyville Heritage (4-3, 2-1) is next up to find out. The Panthers are in good shape for a playoff berth already, but knocking off Argyle could improve their seeding in hopes of avoiding the cream of the crop coming out of District 4-5A DII which includes No. 6 Anna, Celina, and Frisco.

Colleyville Heritage lost to Anna 49-31 to open the season.

Sophomore quarterback Lane Vargas, who has thrown for 2,028 yards (289.7 per game average) and 24 touchdowns will have to have a big game for the Panthers, as will his favorite targets Trevi Preische (53 receptions-855 yards, 7 TDs) and Lucas Sunwall (34-529, 5 TDs).

Hackney had thrown for 2,574 yards and 32 TDs so far this season, so replacing that production will be tough. Sophomore Cobe Wilson will likely be called on to replace Hackney and he’ll have to get the ball to wide out Julian Caldwell (51-929, 16 TDs) and the rest of the Eagles’ loaded offensive weapons.

Red Oak vs. Mansfield Lake Ridge, 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson Stadium

In District 11-6A we have No. 1 North Crowley, No. 11 Waxahachie and No. 23 Duncanville as all but locks to make the playoffs. But that fourth spot is where it becomes interesting.

The game between Red Oak (4-3 overall, 2-2 district) and Mansfield Lake Ridge (4-3, 2-2) looks like it will likely decide that fourth berth on Friday night. Both teams have close wins over Mansfield (3-4, 1-3), and Crowley (2-5, 1-3) might have something to say about it, but the Hawks have already downed Crowley’s Eagles.

Lake Ridge will have to try to contain Red Oak quarterback Tuhran Square II who has piled up 1,489 total yards (482 rushing, 998 passing) this season with 13 touchdowns. Kylen Jones, Christian Haywood (if available) and Myles Johnson lead the Eagles’ defense.

Lake Ridge leans on its quarterback heavily as well as with Deshawn Edwards accumulating 2,083 total yards (809 rushing, 1,274 passing) and 28 TDs. Running back Johnathon Mwangala (89 carries-548 yards, 6 TDs) and wide out Rayden Newsome (31 receptions-511 yards, 8 TDs) compliment Edwards.

Arlington vs. Arlington Bowie, 7 p.m. Friday at Choctaw Stadium

There’s currently a three-way tie for the fourth playoff spot in District 3-6A and Arlington Bowie (3-4 overall, 2-2 district) and Arlington High (4-3, 2-2) are two of those teams and meet on Friday at Choctaw Stadium.

Dave Campbell’s computer predictions have Arlington as a two-point favorite, so this one should go down to the wire. Bowie defeated Arlington Lamar in overtime, 29-23, and Arlington lost to the Vikings, 31-21.

The Volunteers have an easier schedule the rest of the way, so this is almost a must win for Arlington. Canon Cambron leads the Colts on offense while linebackers Luis Mendoza and Miles Tolleson anchor the defense.

The majority of Bowie’s offense runs through quarterback Mason Nichols who has thrown for 1,477 yards this season with A.J. Birdow (46 catches-462 yards) and Maxwell Nichols (39-454) being Mason Nichols’ favorite targets. Darryl Nash, Kaleb Phifer and Jermal Williams lead the Vols defense.

Alvarado vs. Springtown, 7 p.m. Friday at Porcupine Stadium

A key game in District 4-4A Division I involves Alvarado (3-4 overall, 3-1 district) and Springtown (3-4, 2-2) which will likely decide the fourth-place playoff participant.

Springtown won just one of its first five games including losses to state powers Brock and Robinson as well as the first two district contests to Lake Dallas (22-21) and Aubrey (21-14). Alvarado has a rough road ahead, facing the four top teams in the district in the final four games.

All the playoff teams out of 4-4A have a chance to make a deep runs in the playoffs with No. 9 Decatur leading the way, despite the Eagles having lost to Aubrey (28-21) two weeks ago.

Quarterback Kaine Hill leads the Porcupines’ offense, averaging 260.8 all-purpose yards per game. Kameron Jenkins leads Alvarado with 19 TDs.

Midland Christian at FW All Saints Episcopal, 7 p.m. Friday

Two of the top teams in TAPPS Division II meet on Friday as Fort Worth All Saints (7-2 overall, 3-0 TAPPS Division II-District 1) hosts Midland Christian (5-3, 2-0). Both teams are locks for playoff berths.

All Saints comes in at No. 1 in TAPPS Division II according to MaxPreps and Midland Christian is No. 2. The Mustangs defeated Argyle Liberty Christian, 66-63, to open the season, a team that defeated All Saints, 38-35, in Week 2.

The Saints could be without star quarterback Brailon Davis who’s nursing an injury, but backup Bodie Brown has stepped in and completed 32 of 45 for 454 yards and seven touchdowns in the past two games. Running back Brayden Boults has also been stellar, rushing for 1,267 yards (140.8 per game) and 16 touchdowns with receiver Noah Tarrant leading a strong receiver room with 39 catches for 583 yards and seven TDs.

Brown will have to be on his game as the Midland Christian defense forced four turnovers, three interceptions and a fumble recovery, last week against Fort Worth Southwest Christian. All Saints linebacker Jet Thomas will have to contain Mustangs’ quarterback Jaxson Franco who threw for three scores and ran for one in the first half last week.

Fort Worth-area football: Keep tabs on these five Week 9 games.
