The Rebels recorded a pair of ranked wins within the season’s first three weeks before getting blown out in Gainesville in Week 4, only to bounce back with resounding wins over Vanderbilt and Missouri. Texas, meanwhile, was widely considered a national championship contender entering the season and appeared to live up to that status a third of the way through the season with a resume that included wins over Ohio State and Tennessee, before things went south in a pair of games very few people expected it to lose.

All of this to say that questions surrounding both teams are in no short supply.

The offensive comparison

The offensive comparison between the two teams will be something to watch.

The Rebels average 444.5 yards and 37.5 points per game, while Texas averages 361.3 yards and 30.2 points per game.

Star Rebel QB Trinidad Chambliss has completed 142 of 210 passes for 1,676 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. His 67.6% completion rate and eight yards per attempt have been a focal point of the Rebels’ passing attack, which ranks second among SEC teams in yards per game.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning has completed 106 of 166 passes for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, good for a 63.9% completion rate and 7.8 yards per attempt.

While there was much chatter surrounding both quarterbacks entering the season, the difference in the stat books is noteworthy here. Ole Miss averages 290.7 passing yards per game, compared with 226.3 for Texas.

Manning’s protection will be another factor to watch. The Longhorns’ quarterback has been sacked a concerning 17 times, which should worry Longhorn fans with their quarterback and offensive line squaring off against an Ole Miss defensive front that includes Suntarine Perkins, Will Echoles and Kam Franklin.

The defensive comparison

However, on the other side of the ball, the Longhorns’ defensive numbers need little introduction.

The Longhorns allow 272.5 yards per game, the third-lowest total in the SEC, and give up 17.8 points per game. Opponents have averaged 166.2 passing yards and 106.3 rushing yards against Texas.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, allows 390 yards and 23.8 points per game. The Rebels give up 236.5 passing yards and 153.5 rushing yards per game, placing them near the bottom of the SEC in total defense, which has widely been considered the team’s Achilles’ heel.

That makes last week’s performance against Missouri particularly notable for Ole Miss.

The Rebels held the Tigers to three points and 39 rushing yards, an unmistakable turnaround from the defensive struggles that contributed to a 52-28 loss at Florida just a handful of weeks ago. That performance offers a positive sign for a defense that will face a quarterback with the last name Manning on Saturday, in one of the loudest and most electric atmospheres in college football.

What’s at stake in Austin

The stakes for both teams are pretty much self-explanatory as well. Texas has basically no choice but to win out if it plans on punching a ticket to the College Football Playoff. The Rebels, meanwhile, face one of the most difficult schedules in the country, and there’s at least a nonzero chance that the result in Austin will determine whether the Rebel faithful return to the College Football Playoff for a second straight year.

One thing the fans in Oxford are certainly hoping to see is their team playing better on the road against upper-level competition. Ole Miss has recorded only a single road win against a ranked SEC team over the past eight seasons. Championship-caliber teams find ways to win in any environment: home, neutral or away. This game may well be a test to see if the Rebels can score a signature win in a hostile, raucous atmosphere.

For the Rebels, the challenge is clear: continue producing offensively while showing that the defensive improvement against Missouri can carry over against a Texas team looking to save its season. If the Rebels can find a way to leave Austin victorious, a return to the playoffs will become that much closer to reality.

Up next: No. 7 Ole Miss travels to Austin to take on No. 19 Texas on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

More Ole Miss vs. Texas: Ole Miss offense vs. Texas defense | Ole Miss defense vs. Texas offense | Ole Miss vs. Texas by the numbers | Rebel Walk staff predictions | Ole Miss injury report

Related

Jacob Quaglino

Jacob is a New Orleans, LA native and Ole Miss alumni, Class of 2024 and staff writer with The Rebel Walk. He has been a diehard fan of all Ole Miss sports his entire life, with his earliest Ole Miss sports memory being the Rebels’ iconic 2008 upset of then-No. 4 Florida. Among his other favorite Rebel sports memories are storming the field after beating LSU in 2023 and Georgia in 2024, watching the Rebels upset Alabama in back to back years in 2014-15, seeing the women’s golf team win the school’s first-ever NCAA-recognized national championship in 2021, and watching the Rebel baseball team win the College World Series in 2022. He remains exceedingly hopeful that the Ole Miss Athletics Department’s national championship trophy collection will grow in the coming years. Outside of The Rebel Walk, Jacob also works for a local radio news station and has many interests and hobbies, including reading, writing, watching college sports, playing pickleball, and traveling.

OXFORD, Miss. – With the regular season now just past the halfway point, the time has come for…

[11
3230,132,134,133,29487,158110,64056,3231,161134,537,12567,143206
post-475760","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-arch-manning","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news","tag-ole-miss-football","tag-pete-golding","tag-rebels","tag-steve-sarkisian","tag-suntarine-perkins","tag-texas-longhorns","tag-trinidad-chambliss","tag-will-echoles
["GET
