A South Dallas addiction recovery program is expanding its mission with a new home at the corner of South Boulevard and Cleveland, giving more men a chance to rebuild their lives.

For 16 years, Louis Harrell Jr. has helped men overcome addiction through Men of Nehemiah, a faith-based treatment program with roots in his own personal journey to recovery.

Harrell said his parents originally started the program to save his life as he struggled with addiction.

“They never stopped loving me. They never stopped believing that I would come out of my addiction,” Harrell said.

Now, Harrell guides other men through their own recovery, including some who have been involved in gangs and faced difficult circumstances.

But there’s one requirement for everyone who enters the program.

“Everyone who comes through those doors must sing,” Harrell said.

Music and worship are central to the Men of Nehemiah experience. Harrell said singing helps men lower their defenses and become more vulnerable, allowing them to open up as they work toward recovery.

“When a man sings, he starts to be vulnerable,” Harrell said.

For many of the men, the program offers something they have long been searching for — love, support and a sense of belonging.

One of those men is Dallas, who is two months into the nine-month recovery program.

His journey has included multiple attempts at treatment, incarceration and years of homelessness.

“12 treatment centers, a few trips to prison and I spent 4 years homeless on the streets,” Dallas said.

But two months into his time at Men of Nehemiah, Dallas described a different outlook on his future.

“Free. And that I’m able to start being the man that I’m supposed to be,” Dallas said when asked how he was feeling.

The program’s new South Dallas facility will allow Harrell and his team to serve more men, with additional beds, a full kitchen, a gym and more room for the singing and worship that have become hallmarks of Men of Nehemiah.

For Harrell, the expansion represents something bigger than a new building.

“We lead with worship, we lead with praise, but I never envisioned a building – I saw something bigger – but to see this – Oh my god,” Harrell said.

He envisioned a program that could transform lives and bring hope to the community where he has spent years helping others find recovery.

Now, with a larger home and windows that can open to the surrounding neighborhood, the sounds of worship and recovery can reach beyond the program’s walls and into the streets of South Dallas.
