A Texas school custodian burst into tears after she learned a new elementary school would be named in her honor \u2014 39 years after she first started working for the district.<\/p>\n
Marilyn Hampton, who retired this year, was surprised when the Aubrey Independent School District board of trustees announced Wednesday that \u201cElementary School Number Five\u201d will be known as \u201cMarilyn Hampton Elementary School\u201d when it opens next year. <\/p>\n
Superintendent Shannon Saylor had asked Hampton to roll out a red carpet in front of the speaker\u2019s podium during the board meeting \u2014 much like tasks she handled over the years as a custodian.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe may not have the official title of an educator, but she was in every meaningful sense a teacher and an educator at heart,\u201d Saylor said of Hampton, according to footage that the school shared on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n Texas school custodian Marilyn Hampton was overcome with emotion after learning a new elementary school would be named in her honor. Facebook\/Aubrey ISD<\/p>\n Looking down at the carpet, Hampton then saw the name \u201cMarilyn Hampton Elementary School.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re too good. I wasn\u2019t expecting this. Thank y\u2019all. I can\u2019t speak,\u201d Hampton said, before breaking down in tears and covering her face with her hands.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my goodness. Oh God. You all are the best,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Board members rushed to hug Hampton as she was shown an image of the school bearing her name.<\/p>\n The Aubrey Independent School District\u2019s board of trustees surprised Hampton with a red carpet bearing the name \u201cMarilyn Hampton Elementary School.\u201d Facebook\/Aubrey ISD<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t bring my phone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s OK, it\u2019ll be everywhere,\u201d Saylor joked.<\/p>\n The school, which is based in Aubrey, Texas, is scheduled to open next August.<\/p>\n Hampton poses with members of the Aubrey Independent School District, where she worked as a custodian for 39 years.
