They were addressed to “Students of the Family.”

As early voting opened across Texas this month, households from Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston, San Antonio and the Panhandle found a glossy “Texas Trans & LGBTQ+ Student Resource Guide” in the mailbox. Inside, a child could learn how to petition for emancipation from their parents, where to find hormones, how to travel out of state for irreversible interventions Texas law now rightly bans for minors, and how to build a “found family.”

Parents were furious, and they should be.

But let’s be clear about what we know, because the facts outweigh the understandable outrage.

The mailers came from a “Texas Transgender Student Union LLC,” a company filed in Wyoming on Sept. 2 through an anonymous registered agent. Its return address in Meadows Place doesn’t exist. The Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT), whose branding, links and event dates fill the pamphlet, says it did not write, approve or send it. A Republican district attorney in West Texas has opened a forgery investigation. Even the Republican lawmaker who first asked the attorney general to investigate TENT now says the materials may not have come from the group named on them.

No one has been identified. TENT has asked a Travis County court for permission to depose the vendors behind the mail and text campaigns, and the texting company has so far declined to name its client. But a shell company, a fake address and a statewide mailing timed to the first day of early voting point somewhere. Political analysts suspect, and I suspect too, that someone on the Right paid for this to stir up conservative voters.

If so, it was wrong. Conservatives don’t need forgeries to win an argument, and we should say so plainly when someone on our side manufactures one.

Yet dismissing the pamphlet as a hoax misses the more important point. Whoever printed it didn’t have to invent a single idea in it. They just needed to hit Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V — copy and paste.

Read the pamphlet without the envelope and ask a simple question: which of these ideas is brand new?

The pamphlet tells a child who questions their sex to find a “safe adult” — a teacher, a counselor, a friend’s parent — instead of going to their own mother and father. It casts a family that won’t affirm as a danger to be managed. It promises that the people who truly understand them are the ones they meet online or at events, not the ones who raised them. And it treats Texas law as an obstacle to work around.

None of this is fringe. In 2024, California made it illegal for school districts to require teachers to tell parents when a child asks to go by a new name or pronoun. “Found family” is standard vocabulary in LGBT youth outreach. And TENT’s own back-to-school guide, the real one linked in the text messages that preceded the mailers, coached students on using school grievance processes when told that Texas’ Senate Bill 12 bars the clubs they want. The guide has since disappeared from TENT’s website.

TENT’s lawyer says the pamphlet included advice the group doesn’t support, including the section on legal emancipation. Perhaps not officially. But the leap from “your parents are a danger” to “you’d be better off without them” is a short one. Gay liberation activists made it as far back as 1972, demanding that “any legal rights parents have over ‘their’ children should be dissolved.”

That’s why so many parents believed it. It sounded exactly like what they’ve been hearing from school boards, from advocacy groups, and from Sacramento for years. A hoax, like a forgery, only works if it’s plausible.

LGBT activists may not have sent these pamphlets. But they’ve spent decades writing the script.

Whoever wrote the pamphlet probably didn’t believe a word of it. But they described the ideology accurately, and that’s the warning. Its target isn’t a ballot or a legislature. It’s the family.

Notice how the ideology the pamphlet describes works. It doesn’t argue with parents; it routes around them. Around Mom and Dad, to a “safe adult.” Around the state line, to a clinic somewhere else. Around the family, to a new one. Every step moves a child further from the people who know and love them best.

The words may have been typed by a skeptic, but they’re true to the movement. A parent who hesitates is recast as a threat. A child’s confusion is treated as a settled identity to be protected from the people raising them. And the home, the first place a struggling child should be able to turn, becomes the last place they’re told to look.

Texas has some of the strongest protections in the country — Senate Bill 14 ended medical transition for minors, and Senate Bill 12 kept gender-identity clubs and social transition out of public schools — and the pamphlet still landed in mailboxes addressed to Texas students. The message in that envelope isn’t confined to Texas mailboxes. It’s in curricula, counseling offices and phone screens across the country.

So, parents everywhere should treat it as a legitimate threat, not a curiosity. It’s rare to see the strategy written down so plainly, and rarer still to have it delivered to your front door.

A lie can still highlight the truth. The pamphlets may be a hoax, but the ideology on their pages is very much real, and it isn’t aimed at an election. It’s aimed at the bond between parents and their children.

Isaac Beck is a writer and the project director of advocacy and government affairs for the Changed Movement.
