{"id":477240,"date":"2026-10-26T16:10:16","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T16:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/477240\/"},"modified":"2026-10-26T16:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T16:10:16","slug":"man-charged-in-san-antonio-austin-shootings-that-killed-6-due-in-court-in-austin-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/477240\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged in San Antonio-Austin shootings that killed 6 due in court in Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Nearly three years after a <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/police-investigating-officer-involved-shooting-at-mopac-and-la-crosse-in-sw-austin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">string of shootings across San Antonio and Austin<\/a> that investigators say left six people dead and three others wounded, Shane James is scheduled to appear in court in Austin on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>James is set to appear at the Travis County Courthouse at 9:15 a.m. He faces multiple charges, including capital murder and aggravated assault, in connection with the shootings in December 2023.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/serious-crash-shuts-down-eastbound-highway-71-del-valle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALSO | 2 hospitalized after vehicle catches fire in crash on SH 71<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A judge has ordered a mental competency exam that legal experts say must be completed before a trial can begin. James\u2019 competency has been an issue in the case before. In October 2024, a judge ruled him <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/travis-county-judge-rules-shane-james-jr-incompetent-to-stand-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">incompetent and ordered treatment.<\/a> In July of last year, a judge ruled him competent to stand trial. In September, court filings showed his attorneys planned to argue he was legally insane during the shootings.<\/p>\n<p>Competency and insanity are separate legal questions. Competency focuses on whether a defendant can understand the case and assist in the defense now. Insanity addresses legal responsibility at the time of the alleged crimes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/shooting-at-the-domain-leaves-one-hospitalized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALSO | North Austin shooting at The Domain leaves one hospitalized<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Investigators say the violence began in the San Antonio area, where James allegedly killed his parents. Then, at 10:45, an Austin ISD police officer was shot. Around noon, two people were killed on Shadywood Drive. Just before 5 p.m., a cyclist was shot on West Slaughter Lane. Before 7 p.m., two more people were found dead in South Austin and an Austin police officer was wounded.
