Here’s what to know

If you’re heading up to Medina Lake for a little fun in the sun, you may want to be on the lookout, as visitors may still face restrictions at one of the reservoir’s primary public access points, even after summer rainfall improved water levels.

According to Bandera County’s official website, Medina Lake County Park remains closed for lake access, including boat launching and parking, because of the reservoir’s low water levels. The county park is still open for weekend picnicking between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The recreational access points will remain closed until water levels rise high enough to safely accommodate their use.

The reservoir is 27.5% full as of Sunday, October 25, 2026. Just six months ago, the lake was less than 4% full, per Water Data for Texas.

It is likely the park has been closed to the public for some time, as it’s one of the hardest-hit lakes in the state. In April 2025, the body of water sat at just 2.1% — “deadpool status,” according to Dave Mauk, the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District general manager. The last time Medina Lake was considered full was in July 2019. Sarah Voss, owner of the Sunset Resort at Medina Lake, tells MySA that she estimates the public park has been closed to boaters since around June 2022.

Private boat access, recreation still available. But you’ll have to pay

Several private resorts still offer boating and recreational opportunities on the lake. On a recent trip to the lake, MySA drove around for nearly an hour, trying to find another spot to enjoy the lake.

Another option is the Sunset Resort at Medina Lake, which offers boat launch access and amenities for recreationalists every day of the week.

All legally permitted watercraft, including boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes, are welcome, according to Voss. If they want to, boaters can still swim or fish from water vessels after launching from the resort’s facility.

“However, at current lake levels, we do not permit launching inflatable tubes, floats, or rafts solely for floating or hanging out on the lake. Due to current water levels, we do not have a designated area for swimming, fishing, or wading from our shoreline, banks, marina, or docks,” she said. “We simply encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with Texas Parks and Wildlife regulations and practice safe boating,” Voss shared with MySA.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department also lists an access point in the town of Mico, off Farm-to-Market 1283, at the Red Cove Marina, a privately operated facility. This option offers boat launching and other recreational services, though visitors should contact the business directly to confirm availability and fees.

[8
1113,847,10428,820,82,84,83
post-477373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-mysahillcountry","tag-mysanews","tag-mysaoutdoors","tag-mysastaff","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news
["GET
