The pilot died when a single-engine Lancair IV-P plane crashed near a residential neighborhood off W. Bonds Ranch Road, a short distance from Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth, Texas, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. The plane caught on fire.<\/p>\n

A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board<\/a> shows the plane that crashed Oct. 7 in far north Fort Worth collided with power lines before it hit the ground.<\/p>\n

The small plane crashed near the intersection of W. Bonds Ranch Road and Blue Sky Drive, near a residential area, about a minute after it took off from Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth. The pilot, 67-year-old John Unangst<\/a>, was killed in the crash. Unangst was the only person in the plane.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary information, the single-engine plane, a Lancair IV-P, apparently had engine issues and turned around in an attempt to return to the airport before crashing.<\/p>\n

The plane collided with power lines on the south side of the roadway, leaving fragments of the propeller and fiberglass under the power lines. An impact crater was left in an adjacent ditch.<\/p>\n

A post impact fire consumed a majority of the wreckage. The tail of the plane showed no evidence of thermal damage.<\/p>\n

The remaining pieces of the plane were transported for further examination by the NTSB. A final report with probable cause of the crash is expected to be released within 12-24 months.<\/p>\n
