Well, this is kind of embarrassing.<\/p>\n
What do you do when company is coming over? You make a mad dash to clean the house, or at least straighten things up a bit. You want to put your best foot forward and make a good impression. It’s something almost all of us do.<\/p>\n
So why doesn’t Lubbock do the same thing?<\/p>\n
Today, the President of the United States and a state representative are visiting the Hub City. Both are on tight schedules, so there’s a pretty good chance that much of what they’ll see of Lubbock will be the roads between the airport and their destinations.<\/p>\n
To put it mildly, that’s not exactly the scenic route.<\/p>\n
Yup, the interstate coming into town is hot garbage.<\/p>\n
To put it nicely, the best-looking things between the airport and town might be the Love’s Travel Stop or the Flying J. Other than that, it’s a collection of junkyards, industrial properties, and places that look like they ought to be junkyards.<\/p>\n
It’s not exactly the kind of first impression you want to make.<\/p>\n
Now, forget about the politicians for a moment. What about the sports teams, entertainers, business travelers, and other visitors who come to the Hub City?<\/p>\n
They get pretty much the same introduction.<\/p>\n
These people don’t get to see what’s really happening in Lubbock. They don’t see the beautiful neighborhoods, the growing businesses, the restaurants, the shopping, and all the other things that make this city a pretty great place to live.<\/p>\n
Lubbock guests\u00a0see the ugly side of town before they ever get a chance to see the good stuff.<\/p>\n
And that’s a shame, because Lubbock has plenty to be proud of.<\/p>\n
I’m certainly not suggesting that we bulldoze every business between the airport and downtown. Those businesses have every right to be there, and many provide important jobs and services. But surely there’s something we could do to make one of the main entrances to our city a little more attractive.<\/p>\n
Landscaping? Cleanup efforts? Better screening of junkyards? Some actual attention to the appearance of the corridor?<\/p>\n
Heck, I’d settle for making it look like somebody cares.<\/p>\n
This subject has come up plenty of times over the years, and somehow it always gets kicked to the curb. We talk about making Lubbock a destination city, attracting visitors, and showing off everything we have to offer, but we seem perfectly content to greet those visitors with one of the ugliest stretches of road in town. Here’s the part that really bugs me: This isn’t just about appearances. It’s about pride.<\/p>\n If we want people to think of Lubbock as a great place to visit, do business, or put down roots, shouldn’t we make an effort to look the part?<\/p>\n Unfortunately, I suspect the chances of fixing this rolling eyesore just got a little smaller. Our high-profile guests are coming and going, and the opportunity to make a better first impression has already passed.<\/p>\n Maybe we should quit waiting for somebody important to come to town before worrying about how our town looks.<\/p>\n After all, the rest of us have to look at it every day.<\/p>\n Lubbock deserves a better front door.<\/p>\n Things Lubbock Actually Does Better Than Bigger Cities (No One Talks About This)<\/p>\n There’s more to Lubbock than dust and tumbleweeds.
