HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston area shed more than 7,300 jobs last month, the second-largest decline in nearly 40 years, according to the latest jobs report.

Mohammad Ahmadizadeh, an economist with the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, said the drop was not a surprise.

“We saw slower job ads. The number of job ads has been at the lower level than earlier this year,” Ahmadizadeh said.

The biggest declines were in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, trade, transportation and warehousing, and health services, Ahmadizadeh said.

He said the numbers were also affected by changing school schedules. With schools starting in August, companies hire less in September, leading to fewer jobs being created.

Despite the monthly loss, the yearly job count is up by nearly 30,000. Construction, health services and professional and business services, which includes oil and gas jobs, are all up.

“We really benefit from the higher oil prices. So, we have more jobs that have been added related to the oil and gas industry,” Ahmadizadeh said.

So far, 2026 has been a bounce back from last year. Jobs reports show 2025 saw only about 15,000 jobs added. Economists expect this year’s gains to remain steady.

As for next year, they expect the growth to continue with around 40,000 jobs added, which is about 10,000 below normal.

“Overall, I see it as adding more jobs and leading the country in terms of the job growth,” Ahmadizadeh said.

Economists expect a rebound in the next few months, with retailers adding jobs for the holidays and higher gas prices helping locally.

One factor that could affect job growth is rising interest rates. Economists said they did not expect the Federal Reserve to raise rates this year, and higher rates could reduce spending, which could lead to job losses. Still, they said they are confident more jobs are coming to the Houston area.
