FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — A 56-year-old Houston man wanted for questioning in a homicide investigation died by suicide Tuesday following an hours-long armed standoff with law enforcement at a historic church near Round Top, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Keith Korenek said the incident was connected to the investigation into the death of a 59-year-old California man found in the 2200 block of South State Highway 237 on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Deputies responded around 7:44 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive man lying in a driveway. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

An autopsy conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the death was classified as a homicide.

During the investigation, authorities identified a 56-year-old Houston man as a person they wanted to question in connection with the case.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, investigators learned the man was in Houston and planned to travel to a historic church near Round Top using a rideshare service. According to the sheriff’s office, the rideshare driver reported that the man held him at gunpoint and forced him to drive from Houston to the church along State Highway 237. The driver was released and was not physically injured.

Fayette County deputies later located the armed man inside the church, leading to a standoff.

Texas Rangers and a regional Special Response Team, consisting of officers from Fayette, Austin and Colorado counties, responded to assist. Authorities negotiated with the man for several hours before the standoff ended when he took his own life, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.

Sheriff Korenek said there was no danger to the public during the incident.

The sheriff’s office thanked the agencies that assisted, including Fayette County EMS, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Round Top Fire Department, and Warrenton Fire Department.
