The Houston Comets teased their new branding as they plan for their return to the WNBA in 2027.<\/p>\n
The team provided a glimpse on social media ahead of Thursday’s full reveal:<\/p>\n
Based on the short clip, the Comets may be leaning a bit on their original design. <\/p>\n
During Houston’s first run, WNBA jerseys all followed a broad template. The Comets logo and word mark at least helped them stand out a bit.<\/p>\n
Of course, winning four titles also helps establish your brand identity. The Comets reeled off a four-peat from 1997-2000 thanks to the legendary trio of Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson.<\/p>\n
By 2004, however, Houston’s fortunes began to shift dramatically. The team missed the playoffs that season. Within a few years, fan interest and attendance started to decline<\/a>. The WNBA assumed ownership in 2008 and the organization was eliminated entirely.<\/p>\n It was an unbefitting end to the W’s original dynasty.<\/p>\n The league is in a far different place now. Television ratings and attendances have increased across multiple years, and there will be 18 teams once the 2030 tips off.<\/p>\n
