Leaders and activists in the Corpus Christi area praised Dolores Huerta’s role in labor activism and civil rights in light of her death on Oct. 28.<\/p>\n

Huerta was 96, according to a Facebook post her family made.<\/p>\n

Huerta, who lived most of her life in California and popularized the phrase “S\u00ed, se puede,” visited Corpus Christi in June for the Texas Democratic Convention at the Hilliard Center.<\/p>\n

She spoke to a crowd about the political power Democratic Texans possess, grassroots organization, the power of the Latino vote, involving youth in politics and more.<\/p>\n

After her forum, former Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales came to the stage with a bouquet of yellow roses to give Huerta \u2014 a tradition she learned from her grandmother, who would gift the flowers to women.<\/p>\n

“She was a real Latina powerhouse,” Canales said in a phone call. “We will all remember her for how strong and badass she was. It’s a sad day, but it’s also a great day to remember her for what she did for us and what she wants us to continue doing.”<\/p>\n

Nancy Vera, president of the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, said she is saddened by the sudden death of Huerta.<\/p>\n

“She still lives in our hearts because she’s left a legacy for those of us who are in advocacy, and we will continue to honor her in every way possible,” Vera said, her voice breaking. “I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with her multiple times, and she was so inspiring to us all.”<\/p>\n

Nueces County Democratic Party Chair Conor Rice said he was inspired by Huerta as a young activist showing up to school board meetings. In a text message, he said he used to wonder if one person speaking up would make a difference.<\/p>\n

“Dolores told me it could,” Rice said. “She encouraged me, pushed me and got me into the fight. I know I’m one of thousands who can say the same because that was her gift: she didn’t just lead, she made leaders.”<\/p>\n

In September 2022, Huerta made an appearance in Robstown during a political rally for Beto O’Rourke. Local muralist Mayra Zamora was one of the attendees and gave Huerta an original art piece.<\/p>\n

“As a Chicana artist and educator, I believe it’s my responsibility to preserve our history and pass that knowledge on the next generation,” Zamora said in a text message. “[She] has inspired generations and reminds us that change is possible when we stand together.”<\/p>\n
