This week, we have the return of the largest and oldest festival of Islamic arts in the country, the return of a Christmas classic, and world premiere music and dance. Keep reading for these and more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asiasociety.org\/texas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asia Society Texas<\/a>, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofnapam.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of the National Asian Pacific American Museum<\/a>, will host a screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/asiasociety.org\/texas\/events\/film-screening-and-discussion-photographic-justice-corky-lee-story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Photographic Justice: The Corky Lee Story<\/a> on Friday, November 14, at 5:30 p.m. Virgo Lee, a personal friend the Chinese American photographer, will introduce the film, which highlights Lee\u2019s five decades documenting Asian American life, and it will be followed by a discussion with director Jennifer Takaki and producer Raj R. Vaswani. Ahead of a book about Lee\u2019s work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/corky-lee-photographic-justice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his brother, John, wrote<\/a> that Lee \u201cchose a camera as his tool for social change,\u201d saying that he \u201cdescribed his camera as a \u2018sword against injustice\u2019 and quickly began to document, highlight, and advocate for the Asian American communities.\u201d The event is free, but please register <a href=\"https:\/\/asiasociety.org\/texas\/events\/film-screening-and-discussion-photographic-justice-corky-lee-story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natural disasters run like an undercurrent through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupacorde.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Group Acorde<\/a>\u2019s latest dance program, <a href=\"https:\/\/matchouston.org\/events\/2025\/gasp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gasp<\/a>, which will open on Friday, November 14, at 8 p.m. at the <a href=\"https:\/\/matchouston.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MATCH<\/a>. Composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewlienhard.io\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Lienhard<\/a> contributes a soundscape to a work that will be performed on a set containing recycled instruments, including a piano and bass, that were found on the street in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and choreographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anatgrigorio.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anat Grigorio<\/a>\u2019s Inperson, originally created for the company\u2019s first full-evening production, explores breath, anxiety, and the body\u2019s response to natural disaster. Each performance will be followed by a Q&amp;A with the artists. Gasp will be performed again on Saturday, November 15, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, November 16, at 4 p.m. Tickets to any of the performances can be purchased <a href=\"https:\/\/matchouston.org\/events\/2025\/gasp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for $20 to $35.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763043252_277_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Appreciate and celebrate Islamic arts on Saturday, November 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. when the largest and oldest festival of Islamic arts in the country returns to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uh.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Houston<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/islamicartssociety.org\/12th-annual-islamic-arts-festival-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Islamic Arts Festival<\/a> will feature more than 5,000 pieces across various art forms \u2013 calligraphy, Ebru, henna, music, paintings, woodwork, and more \u2013 from over 50 artists. In addition to the art, visitors can enjoy live art demonstrations, a live Sufi music program, a stand-up Muslim comedy show, a film festival, spoken word program, and more. The festival continues on Sunday, November 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission to the festival is free, and you can register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/islamic-arts-festival-2025-tickets-1425994801839\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Note that admission to special entertainment performances must be purchased separately.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to wait for rodeo season to don your best western wear. Instead, head over to <a href=\"https:\/\/orangeshow.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orange Show Center for Visionary Art<\/a> on Saturday, November 15, from 12 to 6 p.m., when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinefesthouston.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zine Fest Houston<\/a> returns for the fifth year. This year\u2019s theme is Western, and if you dress for the occasion, you can participate in the fashion show towards the festival\u2019s conclusion. But before that, you can enjoy a performance by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lofipuppets\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LoFi Puppets<\/a>, live music with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/samandthecatz\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Turner and The Cactus Cats<\/a>, a zine workshop by Kill My TV, a talk with featured artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ibroussardart\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isaiah Broussard<\/a>, food and drink, almost 200 vendors on hand to showcase a variety of self-published works, and more. All ages are welcome, and admission is free.<\/p>\n<p>The Singing Revolution, a famous (and successful) example of nonviolent resistance that eventually led Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to break from the Soviet Union, served as an inspiration to Estonian American composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lembitbeecher.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lembit Beecher<\/a> for Cassette Dreams of the Singing Revolution, a new work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apollochamberplayers.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo Chamber Players<\/a> will world premiere at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/houstonquakerskyspace.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Turrell Live Oak Meeting House<\/a> during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apollochamberplayers.org\/enlighten.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enlighten<\/a>, the second concert in its season-long American Story series. In the spirit of the series, the program will also highlight Native American influences via the work of Chickasaw composer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jerodtate.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jerod Impichchaachaaha\u2019 Tate<\/a> and narration by Houston-based indigenous actress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ameliarico.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amelia Rico<\/a>. Credit: Lynn Lane<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s beginning to look a lot like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alleytheatre.org\/plays\/christmas-carol\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Christmas Carol<\/a> over at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alleytheatre.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alley Theatre<\/a>, as the company\u2019s annual holiday production of Charles Dickens\u2019s classic tale, faithfully adapted by Alley Artistic Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robmelrose.com\/home.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Melrose<\/a>, officially opens on Sunday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. Returning to the role of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the man who goes through a transformative experience after being visited by ghosts on Christmas eve, is David Rainey, whose \u201cdown to a science\u201d take on the character had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpress.com\/arts\/review-a-christmas-carol-and-the-twelve-ways-of-christmas-19370521\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Press saying<\/a> it \u201cshould be preserved in a bottle and sold at the concession stand.\u201d Performances will continue through December 28 at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; 1:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and\u00a06:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets can be purchased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alleytheatre.org\/plays\/christmas-carol\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for $36 to $138.<\/p>\n<p>The Tony Award-winning musical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/houston.broadway.com\/shows\/the-outsiders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Outsiders<\/a>, drawn from S.E. Hinton\u2019s classic coming-of-age novel turned classic 1983 film, will arrive in Houston on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/houston.broadway.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaydonnget.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaydon Nget<\/a>, who plays Two-Bit in the production, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpress.com\/arts\/tony-award-winning-the-outsiders-arrives-in-houston\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Houston Press<\/a> that the haves vs. have-nots story \u201cties generations,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful message of how there is an outsider in all of us and a sense of wanting to belong.
