The work is expected to take two years to complete and is funded through Bond 2022.

While the project will replace the roadway, some business owners along the busy stretch are concerned about how construction could affect customer traffic and their bottom lines.

“We’re gonna do everything we can. Absolutely. It’s gonna hurt us but we’re not gonna fall,” Paul Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez owns The Patio, a bar connected to Eirinis Gyros and More. The restaurant has been on Alameda Street for 15 years, while The Patio opened about a year and a half ago.

Gonzalez said he and his business partners are exploring ways to keep customers coming in during construction, including routing traffic through the business’ back parking lot.

He also urged customers to support local businesses rather than turn to larger chains during the disruption.

“We’ve got some amazing food that people don’t know about, and going out to these big chains, they’re going to be fine. But during something like this, during the pandemic, during a road closure, small business like us, we need your support,” Gonzalez said.

Elena Flores, who operates a cultural gift shop called Sew Bonita along Alameda Street, said the construction timeline comes at a particularly busy time for her business.

Flores said the city recently informed her that construction would begin next week, just as the holiday shopping season gets underway.

“We are in the midst of holiday season and Small Business Saturday is kicking off the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so the last quarter of the year is usually really busy for us,” Flores said. “We are anticipating another busy season and we hope that our customers support us.”

Flores said she understands the work needs to be done but hopes customers continue visiting businesses along Alameda Street throughout the project.

“It needs to be done and we know that it needs to be done and we welcome it, but we’re just hoping the community comes out to support not only our store but all the other local businesses on Alameda,” Flores said.

Construction on the Alameda Street replacement project is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Nov. 4, and is expected to take two years to complete.
