La Carafe Wine Bar operates inside the oldest standing building in the city, offering a historic, candlelit step back in time. And if the local lore is anything to go by, a few spirits from the past might still be stopping by for a drink.

A Little Houston History With Your Wine

The building’s story is often traced to 1847, but the structure standing today came later. According to the city’s preservation records, Irish-born businessman John Kennedy built the two-story brick bakery between October 1860 and spring 1861, replacing an earlier building destroyed by fire. The Texas Historical Commission’s marker dates its construction to around 1860.

Long before it became a destination for a leisurely glass of wine, the building was part of Houston’s early commercial life. It remained in the Kennedy family until 1970 and earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Its conversion into a bar brought a new chapter to the address, with the framed photographs and paintings collected by former owner William V. Berry helping shape La Carafe’s distinctive interior.

Candlelight, A Jukebox, And A Balcony Above The Square

Inside, the appeal is less about spectacle than atmosphere. Candleholders thick with melted wax, antique furnishings, and a vintage jukebox give the small tavern the feel of a place that has accumulated its character slowly, one evening at a time. It’s an inviting setting for an unhurried drink—and a welcome change of pace from downtown’s brighter, busier bars.

La Carafe serves beer and wine, with outdoor seating on two levels. When the upstairs is open, the balcony offers a particularly appealing perch above Congress Street, looking toward Market Square Park.

And then there are the ghost stories. Local lore includes unexplained footsteps, flickering lights, and a spectral bartender known as “Carl.” Consider those tales part of the tavern’s folklore rather than established history—though they certainly suit a room full of candles and old portraits.

What To Know Before You Go

You may remember La Carafe as a cash-only establishment. More recent visitor reports indicate that it now accepts cards, although older listings still say otherwise. La Carafe is open at 813 Congress St. from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

Come for the candlelight, stay for another song on the jukebox—and leave the ghost hunting to someone who hasn’t just discovered a perfectly good balcony seat.

Photo credit: @shotsbyrayray Tucked away at 813 Congress Street—flanked by modern gastro lounges right on the edge of…

[7
59,56,58,57,75
post-480514","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-beer","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-wine
["GET
