The Dallas Cowboys defense needs to manufacture something. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker just provided a hint at an adjustment that could be coming now that the team is healthier.

No one expected Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker to turn the NFL’s worst defense around overnight. And still, two things have been unpleasant surprises through seven weeks of the 2026 season.

It being this bad so far.

It being so static and frankly, vanilla.

Let’s dive into the second point, as it’s the one the Cowboys could be changing very soon here. At least based on the comments based by Parker on Thursday, it seems like he’s gearing up to turn up the pressure knobs moving forward.

The Cowboys hint more blitzes

Two areas that show how static the Cowboys have been this season: Blitzing and rotating safeties post-snap. Through seven weeks, the Cowboys blitz rate is 28th in the NFL (22.8%) and their safety rotation rate sits at 19th, per Sumer Sports.

Notably, they refused to turn up the pressure against the two backup quarterbacks they’ve faced over the last three games. That includes a 10.53% blitz rate versus Eagles backup Tanner McKee. Those two games felt like great opportunities to try to overwhelm the opposing quarterback and instead, the Cowboys defense waited for Philly to come at them, not the other way around.

Though Parker didn’t reveal the gameplan of the Cowboys defense moving forward, he did hint at returning players as something that “helps” the team increase the pressure.

“It definitely helps, because you have more pressure players,” Parker said of players returning from injury and their impact on increasing the pressure. “(Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown) is certainly a pressure player. (Safety) Caleb Downs, (cornerback Cobie Durant), (safeties Jalen Thompson and PJ Locke), like these guys have proven blitz production in the National Football League.”

All of the above except for Thompson, who remains on IR, are expected to be available for Week 8 and beyond. Locke’s practice window was activated last week and has been a full participant in practice this week.

“The more guys that we get there, the more we can move pieces around, the more that we kind of feel comfortable utilizing some of those skill sets,” Parker added. “It just depends on the game and the opponent but it certainly gives you more options when you have more guys available.”

Cowboys have to manufacture something

So far, the Cowboys’ approach on defense has been a patient one. They play a lot of Cover 3 while not loading the box and while blitzing below the league-average rate. The patience approach hasn’t worked very well for them, however. Executing fundamentals has been a problem for a Cowboys defense that can’t stop the run.

In my view, it’s time to try to create some chaos on defense, even if it means taking some risks. Whether that’s blitzing more often, increasing their man coverage rates, or designing coverages way more.

Based on Parker’s comments, a healthier version of this Cowboys defense might be ready to take on a new identity.

The Dallas Cowboys defense just put together its best three-game stretch of the season. And Christian Parker’s reaction to his game ball suggests he knows the work is far from over.
