Many of the pressures East Austin families face today, he faced growing up.

His story resonated with students and many residents in East Austin.

Ramos was born in Dallas, the son of a Black American father and an Afro-Latin immigrant mother. He and his younger brother were raised by working-class parents who did their best to give their sons a meaningful life. The family later moved to Denton and then Carrollton, where they lived in low-income housing.

“Carrollton was interesting because we stayed at an affordable housing complex, and it’s a fun fact, the complex was owned by Foundation Communities,” Ramos said.

Foundation Communities is an Austin-based nonprofit that runs affordable apartment communities in Austin and North Texas and offers free programs for the people who live there.

After high school, Ramos came to Austin to attend Austin Community College and later Texas State University. His first job after graduating led him into the work that would shape his career.

“I ended up working for a mortgage company, from that mortgage company, I ended up doing foreclosure prevention,” he said.

Ramos has now lived in Austin for more than two decades, he said. Much of that time he has spent organizing in East Austin neighborhoods facing displacement and rapid redevelopment, working to preserve affordable housing and to support residents hit hardest by rising costs.

“Not only did I come from a working-class family, but then a lot of the work I’ve done has been connected with working-class families as well,” he said.

A second run

Natasha Harper-Madison

This is Ramos’ second campaign for the District 1 seat. In 2022 he ran a four-month campaign centered on community connectivity and cultural preservation, and he won 25% of the vote, he said. Then incumbent Natasha Harper-Madison won, but is term-limited from running this election cycle.

This time, he says, he has had years, not months, to build support.

“I feel like I doubled down on community organizing since 2022 and now. And that has completely given me a lot of support because I feel like I’m even deeply rooted, even more so,” Ramos said.

The seat is open this year, but the field is crowded. Ramos, 40, faces Alexandria Anderson, 39; Steven Brown, 42; Amber Goodwin, 46; Michael Nahas, 53; and Portia Riggins, 35. Nahas filed after HT students conducted interviews and wrote stories about District 1. But here’s a profile on Nahas by The Austin Bulldog.

As of Oct. 16, Ramos had raised nearly $45,000, according to The Austin Bulldog. That was second only to Goodwin, whose contributions topped $99,000.

Early voting ends Friday. Election Day is Nov. 3.

Editor’s Note: Huston-Tillotson University sits in the heart of East Austin, inside the boundaries of City Council District 1. The decisions made in this race will shape the neighborhoods around its campus: who can afford to stay, how development changes these streets, and whether the history and culture of East Austin are protected. Students at the city’s oldest institution of higher learning and a historically Black university, have a stake in who represents this district. That’s why they chose to profile District 1 candidates who had filed for office during last semester.

Armani Fowler is a senior at Huston-Tillotson University majoring in communications with a minor in psychology.
