I wonder if they’d let me in to use the bathroom? I mean…Jesus would, right?”

My sincerest apologies if you too learned the hard way that Lubbock doesn’t have enough public restrooms.

Sure, there are tons of restaurants and stores that have bathrooms in them, but those are NOT necessarily public restrooms.

Some places require you to buy something before they’ll fork over the bathroom key. Some keep the doors locked altogether because “The truckers keep using the women’s restroom, so we locked all the doors…” or, “They are out of order…” or, for whatever reason they want.

Dealer’s choice.

And of course, some actually do have public restrooms, but they look like they haven’t been cleaned since the Clinton administration. Anything is better than nothing, but man. There are some absolutely filthy gas station bathrooms in this town.

Lubbock’s public park restrooms aren’t anything special, but boy, are they important.

Ever at the park, throwing the ball with your kid, and suddenly have to make a mad dash to the bathroom?

They’ve saved me, and they’ve probably saved you too.

Happens to us all.

Read More: Why Halloween Vehicle Accidents Pose Real Risks

Imagine being homeless.

Finding somewhere in public to use the restroom can be incredibly difficult for people in town who are experiencing homelessness.

I asked a friend of mine who spent several years on the streets of Lubbock where they used the bathroom most often. They told me that the majority of the homeless people in downtown Lubbock use the restroom at Stripes, Walmart, United, and CVS.

It’s great that they have those options, but they aren’t open 24/7.

We all know that tummy aches don’t care what time of day it is.

They also don’t care if you have money to buy something.

When you gotta go, you gotta go.

I’m not suggesting we put a public restroom on every corner, but I think it would be great to have a few more strategically placed bathrooms where people can take care of business without being forced to spend $7 on a coffee.

Does Lubbock need more public bathrooms?

According to Trust For Public Land’s ParkScore data, Lubbock scores only a 7 out of 100 for park bathroom availability.

That’s pretty dang terrible if you ask me.

What do you think? I’d love to hear from you, especially if you are dealing with homelessness in the Lubbock area.

Do you struggle to find a restroom each day?

If you’d like to keep the conversation going, reach me at ChrissyCovington@townsquarmedia.com and tell me what you think.

Lubbock Life Hacks That All Newcomers Should Know

Gallery Credit: Renee Raven

9 Beautiful Lubbock Parks To Stroll Through To Burn Off Pesky Calories

These are some really great places to burn calories and enjoy nature in Lubbock.

Gallery Credit: Chrissy

Few things in life are as humbling as desperately needing a restroom in public.
